UAS/Drone Flight Test Engineering Lead - Site Scan for ArcGIS

Overview

Site Scan for ArcGIS is a mobile application enabling automated and repeatable drone data captures in order to perform reality mapping and inspection across the ArcGIS system. Site Scan for ArcGIS allows users to plan safe and optimal flight paths using their GIS content, execute automated missions using a variety of drones to collect images and video, maintain records of drone, battery and pilot flight activity, and publish content to colleagues within their organization.

As the leader of our Site Scan UAS/UAV/Drone test flying team, you’ll leverage your drone flying expertise to test and evaluate our mobile app in close collaboration with our Product Development team, educate and assist other pilots, and ensure quality across Esri's fleet of supported drones. The team will have opportunities to share new ideas for testing and flying drones to ensure we uphold a high standard of accuracy and performance for our customers.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team of Drone Pilots by assigning tests for each release including details of vehicle, firmware version, camera model and mobile device combinations to be tested, lead and manage team work performance and aid in the development and growth of each team member
• Commute locally via company or personal vehicle to open flying area 3 to 4 times a week to pilot and test the supported fleet of drones using the latest version of Site Scan for ArcGIS
• Regularly review test strategies to ensure appropriate coverage and traceability between test cases and product requirements
• Execute test cases and fill in test executions; validate bug fixes through reproduction
• Track software defects using relevant tools; provide defect statistics and reports to Software and Product Development teams
• Clearly communicate with Software Development and Product Engineering teams regarding bug reporting, improvement recommendations, and testing implementation; approve or reject app and vehicle firmware versions prior to software release
• Work closely with Software Development to evaluate and integrate forecasted drones, payloads, and testing hardware to ensure compatibility with Site Scan for ArcGIS
• Provide estimates to Product teams and Developers and assist in project scheduling
• Aid in test planning and hardware forecasting for each release including support for new vehicles, firmware versions, cameras, and controllers
• Organize, register, maintain, and inventory drones and drone related hardware
• Document and maintain pilot safety materials, and provide safety training to team members
• Perform Site Scan for ArcGIS demonstrations

Requirements

• 3+ years of UAS/UAV/Drone piloting experience creating repeatable flight plans that capture high-quality and accurate imagery and maintaining hardware in top condition
• 3+ years of leadership experience including accountability for team performance
• Understanding and application of safety risk analysis when creating repeatable flight plans and test flying both on and off site, and ability to appropriately mitigate incidents
• Knowledge and skills in aerodynamics and aviation safety, including weather considerations
• Display of ethical airmanship
• A keen eye for details and motivation to keep those details organized
• Solid understanding of the Software Development Lifecycle
• Valid California driver’s license, clean driving record, and the ability to drive to open flying areas
• FAA Remote-Pilot Certificate (Part 107)
• Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical field

Recommended Qualifications

• Understanding of Scrum and Agile
• Experience in GIS
• Experience writing and executing test cases and test suites using test case management tools such as TestQuality or TestRail
• Familiarity with project management tools, such as GitHub or ZenHub
