Accessibility Product Engineer

Overview

Esri’s accessibility team is an emerging, dedicated team with the goals of driving accessibility innovation in ArcGIS software and products, making a difference in our company culture, and supporting our diverse user communities to uplift all people, emphasizing the inclusion of those with disabilities.
As a pioneering member of this unique and highly collaborative team, you will advocate for accessibility strategies across ArcGIS product groups and development teams, as you inspire, reinforce, and incorporate accessibility best practices across the company. Share your passion for the intersection of advocacy, technology, and digital accessibility and help to enrich the community of GIS accessibility champions at Esri and beyond.

Responsibilities

• Facilitate accessibility projects: Influence and maintain internal and external accessibility resource websites, coordinate with web marketing teams to update and manage public-facing content, track software product development release requirements across ArcGIS software platform, and provide consistent representation for accessibility efforts across the company.
• Manage product accessibility evaluations: Provide support and guidance for product accessibility evaluation efforts conducted with both external (e.g. 3rd party accessibility testing vendors) and internal accessibility consultants.
• Maintain product accessibility documentation: Create and contribute to product Accessibility Conformance Reports (ACRs - also known as VPATs), providing updates for product-specific accessibility features and conformance levels.
• Be an accessibility thought leader: Remain current on accessibility best practices, standards, and trends in development and/or design for accessibility, and apply this knowledge to maintain and improve internal accessibility processes, project tracking environments, and training resource infrastructure.
• Engage with our global community: Communicate to internal and external audiences about accessibility practices at Esri (present at Esri events, author blogs and articles, and create public accessibility resources and materials), including global customers, partners, and distributors on accessibility inquires, standards, and product requirements.

Requirements

• 1-3+ years of relatable experience
• Practical experience in managing IT based projects
• Practical knowledge and comprehension of core accessibility principles for software development
• Familiarity with agile software development methodologies and/or commercial software delivery processes
• Confident in ability to effectively communicate product requirements and project information across various stakeholder audiences (e.g., developers, product managers, end users, customers); experience in technical writing or technical marketing is encouraged
• Bachelor's or master's in computer science, engineering, human-computer interaction, user experience, interaction design, applied social science, a related field such as digital marketing, or comparable industry experience

Recommended Qualifications

• Refined communication and presentation skills
• Familiarity with GitHub for project and issue creation and tracking
• Familiarity with Esri ArcGIS software and/or other GIS and mapping products
• Familiarity with web-based programming languages (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), and/or desktop software programming languages (C#, C, C++, Python)
• Familiarity with accessibility testing practices on at least one platform (e.g. web, desktop, mobile Android/iOS)
• Familiarity with Accessibility Conformance Reports (ACRs) and/or Voluntary Product Accessibility Templates (VPATs)
• Familiarity with current global accessibility standards and guidelines (e.g. WCAG, Revised Section 508)
• Familiarity with assistive technologies such as screen readers, screen magnifiers, and/or voice recognition tools
