Overview


Calcite is a design system and developer platform used by product teams and external partners to craft engaging and consistent user experiences across and between mapping applications. The Calcite team partners with 50+ product teams at Esri, helping them to leverage Calcite UI components, shared styles/foundations, iconography, and documentation and accessibility standards to craft ArcGIS products. Many product teams have custom needs for new components. We are looking for a principal product designer who will drive relationships with multiple product teams to design and standardize new Calcite components across Esri products, championing internal adoption of company design system standards.

Responsibilities


  • Analyze incoming requests made by product teams for new components, working closely with a design system lead, designers, and product managers to identify opportunities for new Calcite components, set prioritization, and estimate completion of design work
  • Define detailed design specification for new Calcite components in Figma based on component usage guidelines’ structure that includes component anatomy, states, types, color, layout, accessibility, etc.
  • Define component documentation on Calcite Design System site, ensuring consistent content organization for usage guidelines
  • Facilitate design reviews with Calcite team members and company stakeholders and incorporate their feedback into your work
  • Maintain documentation of ongoing work for new Calcite components on Calcite Confluence Space, ensuring company stakeholders have visibility into key activities and the progress being made on new Calcite component creation work
  • Contribute to architecting Calcite Figma environment, working closely with other designers and front-end engineers to enhance Calcite UI kits, foundations, tokens, and individual component Figma files while helping govern processes for component creation, version control, announcements, and more
  • Partner with a user researcher to validate usability of new components and proactively advocate for the right work
  • Validate implementation of UI components, ensuring UI components created in Figma and code are consistent and accessible
  • Provide guidelines on Product Design to Calcite users and engineers, participating in virtual discussions, bug triages, and more, acting as a key liaison to drive successful partnerships
  • Consult Esri product teams on Calcite component usage as those teams seek guidelines to successfully adopt Calcite
  • Facilitate educational demos of Calcite components to ArcGIS Product Design and Engineering teams, conveying Calcite innovative practices, while providing guidelines and mentorship to those teams to ensure they are set for success to consume provided guidelines
  • Participate in design systems conferences, constantly learning about design system and Figma innovation practices while applying those into your work

Requirements


  • 8+ years of experience designing and shipping product on web and mobile
  • Proven record of managing design systems; a portfolio that demonstrates your expertise in Design Systems
  • Advanced knowledge of Figma with at least 2+ years designing, governing, and scaling component libraries
  • Experience utilizing WCAG into design solutions
  • Expertise in facilitating workshops and presenting to large audiences
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Passion for continuous improvement and advocacy for leveraging innovative Design and Front-end practices

Recommended Qualifications


  • Familiarity with GitHub and front-end technologies (Stencil, JavaScript, Angular, Ember, React, HTML, CSS, Storybook)
  • Experience coding interactive prototypes or/and component interactive samples
  • Experience maintaining Storybook
