ArcGIS ModelBuilder is a visual programming language for building geoprocessing workflows to automate and document your spatial analysis and data management processes. The ModelBuilder development team is passionate about building capabilities that are used to take analysis and geoprocessing to the next level! The team supports not only an active and diverse user community doing important work around the world, but also numerous other teams at Esri that build geoprocessing tools and want to help customers automate their processes. As a product engineer on the team, you will test new cutting-edge software features, find and help fix bugs, create clear and compelling user documentation to support the success of ModelBuilder, and help drive the evolution of ModelBuilder across ArcGIS. You will be active in the user community to troubleshoot and solve real-world customer problems and understand user scenarios firsthand.


  • Create test plans that concisely and holistically exercise the various tools across geoprocessing for inputs, outputs, parameter types, parameter options, and environment settings of new tools to ensure their quality upon release
  • Write tests in C# (known as Coded UI tests) that exercise the user interface and ensure tools in a model work not only from python, but from the user interface itself
  • Help test each ModelBuilder specific tool with different types of data inputs and various combinations of values and workflows to make sure they are work with different workflows
  • Write tests using python that execute new tools in the variety of ways outlined in the test plan, validate output, and add them to our automated testing harness
  • Troubleshoot user reported issues related to ModelBuilder and geoprocessing tools in current and past software versions that come from technical support calls, conferences, feedback and triage systems
  • Check test failures and fixes on the testing harness every day
  • Test local fixes given by the developer and test the fixes manually and through testing harness before the fix is installed in the software
  • Work with ModelBuilder users to understand their workflows and challenges in the context of a wide variety of domains
  • Share and distribute workflows and projects in samples, tutorials, blog articles, videos, and help documentation
  • Share the power of ModelBuilder with Esri customers through webinars and conference presentations
  • Can work remotely


  • One (1) year of experience in the job offered or related occupation in which the required experience was gained
  • Applicants must also have demonstrated experience with the following: Spatial analysis; ArcGIS Pro; HTML; and Python
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, GIS, geography, or a related field of study

Compensation decisions and the base range for this role take into account many factors including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs.

A reasonable estimate of the base salary range is
$96,500-$135,200 USD
