Karen Bauer has over 25 years' experience in computer-aided design (CAD), 3D modeling, GIS implementation, website design, and database development, both nationally and internationally, including engineering, architecture, and energy industries as well as governmental agencies.
Her career began with a major engineering firm in Texas and went on to an architectural firm in Georgia; an oil, gas, and pipeline company in Colorado; then with Moffatt and Nichol in California, where she developed the firm's first graphic design department, which included website design, 3D modeling, and animation. There, she started designing some of the first photosimulations utilizing both 3D and CAD.
While building 3D models and animations, she saw the need to adhere 3D modeling projects to the earth's surface. She researched cartography and mapping and taught herself ArcGIS. She returned to college and acquired her bachelor of science in applied chemistry after which she was employed by the US Food and Drug Administration as an investigator where she has remained. This position has allowed her to utilize not only her chemistry education but also her GIS skills in helping to organize large groups of inspections that are grouped visually and disseminated to teams of investigators.
Bauer continued her education and acquired a master of engineering specializing in GIS from the University of Colorado, Denver. She also holds a GISP certification.
When she is not working, you will find her snowboarding in winter and backpacking the Colorado Rockies and California Sierras in the summer.
