Alexander E. MacDonald is currently an executive of Spire Global, Inc., in Boulder, Colorado. He joined Spire in January 2016 and is director of Spire Weather. Spire has over 80 satellites in orbit that are collecting ship, aircraft, and weather data. Spire has developed a very skillful global weather model under MacDonald's leadership.
MacDonald started his career as a US Air Force officer. His BS is in math and physics, and he has a MS and PhD in meteorology and a minor in computer science. He was a senior executive at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for over 25 years, leading NOAA's largest research lab from 2006 to 2016. During his federal career, he received four Presidential Rank Awards. He holds two United States patents. He was president of the American Meteorological Society in 2015.
