Overview
SAR DATA PROCESSING IN ARCGIS
The GAMMA Plugin for ArcGIS supports SAR data processing with dedicated SAR-specific tools which can be directly accessed within the ArcGIS user interface. Each tool within the plugin corresponds to a Python function, facilitating integration into automated workflows, e.g., using Jupyter Notebook. Alternatively, automated processes using tools from the GAMMA plugin for ArcGIS can be configured through the ArcGIS ModelBuilder.
For the GAMMA Plugin for ArcGIS subscription and perpetual licenses are offered. To get price information please contact gamma@gamma-rs.ch.
FUNCTIONALITY SUPPORTED
The GAMMA Plugin for ArcGIS seamlessly integrates support for SAR data in ArcGIS Pro, specifically for complex and detected SAR data delivered in radar geometry (slant range / azimuth or ground range / azimuth).
The functionality supported includes steps such as:
- Reading SAR data from various sensors / formats
- Data cropping and concatenation
- Multi-look detection, radiometric calibration (with/without terrain correction)
- Geocoding of SAR data (considering DEM)
- Precise co-registration of SLC and MLI SAR images
- Interferometric coherence estimation
- Multi-temporal processing and filters
- Spatial filtering
- Change detection using backscatter and coherence
- Polarimetric decompositions for quad-pol. and compact-pol. SLC data.
DOCUMENTATION, TRAINING, and SUPPORT
Comprehensive documentation accessible directly within ArcGIS Pro accompanies each tool and input parameter. In addition, the HTML and pdf files of the GEO/LAT documentation are available.
An important learning tool is the specific demo example that demonstrates the use of the Gamma Plugin for ArcGIS from within the ArcGIS user interface is provided. On one hand running the individual tools is demonstrated, on the other hand building and running more automated sequences using e.g. a Jupiter Notebook. In addition, relevant SAR data based results are showcased.
Support to users of the GAMMA Software is
provided by E-mail.
BACKGROUND
The GAMMA Plugin for ArcGIS is based on the GAMMA GEO/LAT modules. The actual programs are written in C. OpenMP is used to parallelize the more demanding steps. Very large data sets can be processed. Python functions were added to run individual GEO/LAT programs and processes combining multiple programs in basic sequences from within the ArcGIS user interface.
Our objective is to support the user with tools that permit generating high quality results. The user has access to relevant processing parameters so that he can implement his own optimized work flow. The GEO/LAT Software of GAMMA provides support to users for more than 25 years. In the SAR community it has an excellent reputation and it is used by leading institutes in the field.
APPLICATIONS
The GAMMA Plugin for ArcGIS provides advanced tools to work with SAR backscatter and coherence. The SAR backscatter depends on the target geometry and dielectric properties. Rougher surfaces result in higher backscatter. Linear structures, particularly if metallic, result in very high directional backscattering if they are oriented perpendicular to the radar look direction. The dielectric constant of soil depends on its liquid water content. Consequently, backscatter change relates to soil moisture change. Water surfaces (lakes, flooded surfaces, …) are generally smooth and therefore very dark in SAR imagery – permitting to map water surfaces with SAR data – and this also during cloudy weather. The interferometric coherence is a measure for small scale geometry change between the two acquisitions used for the interferogram. Water surfaces and vegetation show such small scale geometric changes and have therefore often low coherence values. Bare surfaces show high coherence unless the surface geometry is disturbed (by wind, cultivation, vehicles, animals, earthquakes, …).
Applications that can benefit from SAR data include:
- Land cover / land use mapping
- Disaster monitoring / rapid mapping
- Change detection
- Flood mapping / water body mapping
- Soil moisture mapping
- Wet snow mapping
