Frequently asked questions

Open data is a core component of ArcGIS Hub, serving as the foundation for sharing information with the community. It provides the source data for various information products, apps, projects, and initiatives that enhance the ArcGIS Hub community engagement experience.

ArcGIS Hub takes open data a step further by presenting it in purpose-driven formats, making it ready-to-use for both internal and external collaboration. This focused approach ensures that the data is not just available, but also directed and actionable, helping to address and solve community problems effectively.

ArcGIS Hub Basic is included with ArcGIS Online Creator, Professional, or Professional Plus user type licenses. It allows you to share open data plus create open data sites and pages that can integrate as well as leverage data-driven visualizations and apps created with other ArcGIS products.

The ArcGIS Hub Premium license level offers enhanced functionality and tools to streamline your community engagement efforts. It includes:

  • Features for creating and managing trusted collaborator groups, discussions, map-based discussions, events, projects, and initiatives
  • An event management system and dashboards for monitoring feedback and progress
  • The ability for community members to create profiles, provide feedback, sign up for events, follow initiatives, and receive relevant updates
  • Ready-to-use templates and tools for ArcGIS Hub administrators that help effectively manage both internal and external collaboration and participation

ArcGIS Hub is automatically available with ArcGIS Online Creator, Professional, or Professional Plus user type licenses. If you have access to an ArcGIS Online organization, then you have access to ArcGIS Hub. You can sign in to ArcGIS Hub at hub.arcgis.com using your ArcGIS Online credentials, or by following these steps

You can also launch ArcGIS Hub from the ArcGIS Online app launcher

You can go beyond basic site creation and open data sharing by using the engagement features included with ArcGIS Hub Premium.

The Basic license level features are included. However, the Premium license level features of ArcGIS Hub are not included in an enterprise agreement (EA).

The Premium features are licensed in addition to an EA, but they are available to EA customers at a reduced rate. The features are intended to extend Enterprise GIS and provide GIS features to the community, in effect, extending a customer’s staff, by making it possible for residents, community members, and other internal and external stakeholders to contribute to the efforts of data gathering as well as project and initiative work.

Any organization with ArcGIS Online can take advantage of the Basic license level features of ArcGIS Hub.

An ArcGIS Online Creator, Professional, or Professional Plus user type license is required for both the Basic and Premium license levels of ArcGIS Hub.

The Premium license level of ArcGIS Hub requires you to designate which ArcGIS Online organization (if you have multiple) that you wish to use to manage and administer your hub. If you do not have access to an ArcGIS Online organization or wish to have a new organization created and designated to your hub, you can purchase one. If you plan to have many internal participants in your hub, you might need to purchase additional user types in order to add additional users to your ArcGIS Online organization.

Sites is a capability of ArcGIS Hub which enables you to build custom websites and web pages for sharing content like datasets, web maps, documents, and media. Sites is included with ArcGIS Hub (Basic and Premium) and ArcGIS Enterprise Sites.

Initiatives and projects are included with ArcGIS Hub Premium. They are related but serve distinct purposes. Initiatives are overarching goals and long-term efforts, while projects are focused, short-term, specific activities that contribute to the initiative. Initiatives provide a broader context and overall vision, and projects help to implement and track progress towards those goals.

Projects are out-of-the-box items that enable you to organize, track, and communicate your work towards specific goals or objectives. Projects are easy to configure and can highlight key information about your project’s target area, important milestones, and timely calls to action.

Hub Premium customers can use projects to represent time-bound or location-specific efforts they are organizing to achieve a broader goal or initiative. They can be used to link efforts and actions across your Hub ecosystem.

Initiatives can organize hub projects through two-way associations. Initiatives can be featured on one or multiple sites that highlight the initiative’s work (either through a gallery card on the site layout, in the site’s header, or by being shared to a group that feeds the site’s content catalog). Hub Premium users can create their own custom initiatives to address unique goals or use initiative templates included with ArcGIS Hub to jump-start their work.

Your hub community members are individuals from your community who sign up to join your ArcGIS Hub. They become part of a separate but linked ArcGIS Online organization that is included with ArcGIS Hub Premium. As members of this organization, they can:

  • Create and manage their user profiles
  • Sign up to attend events
  • Store data downloads
  • Follow initiatives
  • Respond to surveys
  • Receive relevant notifications and emails
  • Create stories and web maps using shared data

This setup ensures that your community members can actively engage and contribute, while keeping their activities organized and separate from your existing ArcGIS Online organization.
