They call it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apwa.net\/MyApwa\/Apwa_Public\/Focus_on_Public_Works\/Focus_on_Public_Works.aspx\">Focus On Public Works<\/a> (#FocusOnPW for social media). The technical area for June is Emergency Management (#APWAEmergencyMgmt for social media). In support of this effort, I thought it would be a good idea to share some Esri emergency management resources that the APWA and Public Works community may not be aware of.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"undefined block-editor-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/industries\/emergency-management\/overview\">Emergency Management<\/a> is one of the disciplines that Esri has been supporting for decades across the globe. Focusing efforts to mitigate the impacts and protect against the complex threats and hazards in today&#8217;s modern world requires a deeper understanding of the social, economic, and environmental systems around us. Emergency managers use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/what-is-gis\/overview\">geographic information system (GIS) technology<\/a> with data-driven insights to better prepare and help their communities respond and recover from significant events.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"undefined block-editor-paragraph\">GIS supports Emergency Management in each of these five focus areas:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/industries\/emergency-management\/solutions\/disaster-resilience\">Disaster Resilience<\/a><\/li>\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/industries\/emergency-management\/solutions\/situational-awareness\">Situational Awareness<\/a><\/li>\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/industries\/emergency-management\/solutions\/damage-assessment\">Damage Assessment<\/a><\/li>\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/industries\/emergency-management\/solutions\/debris-removal\">Debris Management<\/a><\/li>\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/industries\/emergency-management\/solutions\/information-sharing\">Information Sharing<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"undefined block-editor-paragraph\">Here are two recent emergency management GIS success stories:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"undefined block-editor-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/blog\/visualizing-ice-storm-damage-aided-salems-response\/\">How Visualizing Ice Storm Damage Aided Salem\u2019s Emergency Response<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"undefined block-editor-paragraph\">City of Salem, Oregon, staff used a map-based emergency management approach to collect and distribute information for prioritizing ice storm response measures. Facing unexpected and widespread ice storm damages, city public works department deploys smart maps and dashboards. Recovery teams identify tree canopy loss using before-and-after imagery, GIS, and AI machine learning. GIS tools support collaboration across departments and documentation for FEMA reimbursement.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"undefined block-editor-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/arcuser\/ml-aids-geospatial-assessment-for-disaster-response\/\">Machine Learning Aids Geospatial Assessment for Disaster Response<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"undefined block-editor-paragraph\">Esri partner Dewberry performs geospatial damage assessments for government clients following natural disasters. Advancements in the field of machine learning (ML) are playing an increasingly important role in performing damage assessments because these capabilities are also being used for proactive disaster response.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"undefined block-editor-paragraph\">As part of Esri\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/arcgis\/products\/arcgis-solutions\/overview\">ArcGIS Solutions program<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/apps\/solutions\/index.html?domain=Emergency%20Management&amp;gallery=true&amp;industry=Public%20Safety&amp;sortField=relevance&amp;sortOrder=desc#home\">seventeen Emergency Management solutions<\/a> are included in this collection of over 140 free, configurable, supported, open source maps and apps. These include solutions like flood impact analysis, damage assessment, emergency management operations, road closures, debris management, warming and cooling centers, and a shelter locator.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"undefined block-editor-paragraph\">This last resource is our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/disaster-response\/overview\">Disaster Response Program<\/a> (DRP). The DRP assists organizations responding to disasters or crises worldwide as part of our corporate citizenship. We support response efforts with GIS technology and disaster response expertise when an organization\u2019s capacity is exceeded.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"undefined block-editor-paragraph\">When you need help quickly, Esri can provide data, software, configurable applications, and technical support for your emergency GIS operations.
