{"id":450782,"date":"2023-04-07T22:24:52","date_gmt":"2023-04-07T22:24:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uat.esri.com\/en-us\/industries\/blog\/?post_type=blog&#038;p=450782"},"modified":"2023-04-07T22:24:53","modified_gmt":"2023-04-07T22:24:53","slug":"thoughts-from-the-2023-npc","status":"publish","type":"blog","link":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/industries\/blog\/articles\/thoughts-from-the-2023-npc","title":{"rendered":"Thoughts from the 2023 National Planning Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"undefined block-editor-paragraph\">The American Planning Association\u2019s 2023 National Planning Conference was this past weekend through Tuesday in Philadelphia.\u00a0 Attendance was in excess of 4,000\u2026a nice increase over last year\u2019s return to an in-person event.\u00a0 As we have over the past three decades, Esri was thrilled to be a part of this event and to support NPC. We were honored to have the opportunity to share our GIS knowledge and expertise with planners from across the country through some inspiring user presentations and learning labs. More importantly, though, it was rewarding hearing from planners to learn the challenges their communities are dealing with and learning about their respective vision and goals for their communities.\u00a0 As I\u2019ve said many times, Esri does not run a planning department on the side. Having the opportunity to listen to hundreds of planners over a few days is incredibly important to the work we do.\u00a0 So, no one was happier than me and my colleagues that our booth was as busy as it was.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/uat.esri.com\/en-us\/industries\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/20230401_104345-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-450802\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/industries\/blog\/app\/uploads\/2023\/04\/20230401_104345-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/industries\/blog\/app\/uploads\/2023\/04\/20230401_104345-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/industries\/blog\/app\/uploads\/2023\/04\/20230401_104345-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/industries\/blog\/app\/uploads\/2023\/04\/20230401_104345-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/industries\/blog\/app\/uploads\/2023\/04\/20230401_104345-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"undefined block-editor-paragraph\">I distinctly remember going to the NPC in the late 90\u2019s having to explain what GIS was to planners and why they needed it. Those days are gone. It is nothing short of inspiring to see adoption of GIS in the daily workflows of planning offices continue to grow.&nbsp; The most common challenges we heard about from planners during NPC centered around:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Housing Capacity, Supply, and Affordability<\/li><li>Updating Comprehensive Plans<\/li><li>Creating More Walkable Communities<\/li><li>Preparing for Zoning Reform<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"undefined block-editor-paragraph\">In fairness, most of these initiatives overlap (e.g. updating zoning to accommodate denser housing can lead to walkable communities, etc.).&nbsp; There\u2019s very little about planning that exists and operates in a silo.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-session-takeaways-and-insights\">Session Takeaways and Insights<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"undefined block-editor-paragraph\">We were also fortunate to participate in five different sessions during NPC.\u00a0 First, there were two inspiring and relatable case studies.\u00a0 State College, Pennsylvania talked about how they\u2019re using GIS to not only visualize and analyze new development, but how it can be used <a href=\"https:\/\/planning-department-state-college-borough-statecollegepa.hub.arcgis.com\/\">as a tool of civic inclusion<\/a>. This keeps the community informed and engaged about the changing landscape of this college town.\u00a0 Boulder, Colorado spoke about their use of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/urban\/design-planning\/building-consensus-scenarios-planning-arcgisurban-boulder\/\">GIS to create and analyze impact models<\/a> for their long-range planning.\u00a0 Second, we were on two panels discussing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/arcuser\/geoplpanning\/\">the modern approach to leveraging GIS<\/a> for planning sustainable communities.\u00a0 Finally, we coordinated with Esri partner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hlplanning.com\/\">Houseal-Lavigne<\/a> to conduct a hands-on learning lab examining using GIS for suitability analysis.\u00a0 I think we needed a half dozen extra tables to accommodate everyone.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-it-takes-a-headset-i-mean-planner\">It Takes A Headset&#8230;I Mean&#8230;Planner<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"undefined block-editor-paragraph\">Finally, we were excited to be a part of the APA Advocacy Division\u2019s initiative #ItTakesAPlanner by supporting two stations in The Hub.\u00a0 One was a hands-on\u2026well, ok\u2026headset-on VR experience.\u00a0 Here, planners experienced how modern tools like a VR headset and a 3D web scene can be used to interactively visualize and advocate for planning projects.\u00a0 The second was a selfie station where planners got to have an Esri basemap of their community behind them.\u00a0 Every time I went over there, that place was busy.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\"
