The fear of artificial intelligence (AI) has already disrupted student educational planning, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/analytics\/644939\/state-of-higher-education.aspx\">recent study<\/a> by Gallup-Lumina Foundation (2026).\u00a0Of the nearly 4,000 enrolled college students surveyed, 47% of students said\u00a0they had thought about switching their majors or field of study due to AI.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" information system (GIS)&nbsp;analyst will&nbsp;not&nbsp;be&nbsp;completely&nbsp;replaced by AI\u2014assuming&nbsp;they&nbsp;acquire&nbsp;the&nbsp;appropriate skills!&nbsp;This&nbsp;technological&nbsp;push, rooted by imagery and remote sensing,&nbsp;is evolving the role of the GIS analyst in exciting&nbsp;ways\u2014specifically, morphing&nbsp;the traditional mapper into an indispensable&nbsp;<em>spatial context engineer<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>This&nbsp;blog article&nbsp;shares&nbsp;how&nbsp;technological&nbsp;advancements in&nbsp;remote sensing&nbsp;data availability, cloud&nbsp;computing, AI, and an awareness of industry&nbsp;applications&nbsp;should&nbsp;be&nbsp;embraced during&nbsp;your GIS education&nbsp;to prepare you to jump into&nbsp;your&nbsp;career&nbsp;with confidence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-skill-1-build-your-foundation-in-remote-sensing-and-reality-mapping\"><strong>Skill 1: Build\u00a0Your\u00a0Foundation\u00a0in Remote Sensing\u00a0and Reality Mapping<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n<p>Make sure to take at least one course in remote sensing\u00a0if it is offered.\u00a0If not, look for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/training\/catalog\/68250ef99d321b7e769b5e9f\/the-arcgis-imagery-mooc-foundations-and-frontiers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">online resources<\/a> to fill this gap.\u00a0The course should include\u00a0earth\u00a0observation fundamentals such\u00a0as\u00a0an\u00a0introduction to\u00a0the different types of sensors (optical,\u00a0synthetic aperture radar [SAR],\u00a0lidar, hyperspectral, thermal);\u00a0trade-offs between temporal, spatial, radiometric, and spectral resolutions;\u00a0and\u00a0time series and change detection techniques,\u00a0plus\u00a0training on\u00a0how to measure accuracy and validate derived data insights.\u00a0With\u00a0all\u00a0the\u00a0current\u00a0data noise\u00a0and caveats associated with\u00a0computer-generated results, industry leaders are looking to their teams to help them understand when they should be concerned about the accuracy and repeatability of these\u00a0results.\u00a0As a spatial context engineer, you need\u00a0these fundamentals to\u00a0be able to make recommendations and adapt as sensors and platforms change.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<figure quickly\u00a0expanding\u00a0from\u00a0only\u00a0two-dimensional mapping to\u00a0three-dimensional digital twins.\u00a0Imagery and remote sensing are how a digital twin knows what the world looks like, how\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0changing, and whether it matches reality.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/digital-twin\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Digital twins<\/a>\u00a0are\u00a0most effective when they become living\u00a0digital twins\u00a0via a continuous update of data, often provided by imaging sensors and live data feeds.\u00a0You need to experiment with building your own small-scale digital twin.\u00a0Select\u00a0an area on campus, your neighborhood, or even a natural system like a park or beach\u00a0to study.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/arcwatch\/dallas-college-students-map-their-way-to-workforce-readiness?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Building<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/arcwatch\/dallas-college-students-map-their-way-to-workforce-readiness?\">\u00a0your own\u00a0twin<\/a> can\u00a0help you learn to create\u00a03D scenes and meshes,\u00a0work with new sensor data, use\u00a0imagery as ground truth,\u00a0and\u00a0integrate\u00a0elevation data.\u00a0Think about how you can make this\u00a0a living\u00a03D visualization by connecting to a time series dataset or visualizing vector overlays that can lead to an\u00a0impactful decision.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" volume of earth observation data is too large to manage in local file systems and on laptops.&nbsp;You should expect that as a professional GIS analyst, you will have to work with&nbsp;systems engineers and IT professionals.&nbsp;Your&nbsp;organization\u2019s&nbsp;geospatial&nbsp;information&nbsp;officer&nbsp;(GIO)&nbsp;may&nbsp;expect you to be able to&nbsp;help curate their&nbsp;imagery&nbsp;repositories so&nbsp;that&nbsp;they can be&nbsp;used for&nbsp;automated&nbsp;processing.&nbsp;Employees who&nbsp;understand&nbsp;imagery&nbsp;metadata quality and file&nbsp;formats are the most valuable.&nbsp;Get comfortable with cloud-native&nbsp;imagery&nbsp;formats&nbsp;like CRF,&nbsp;COG, Zarr, Parquet,&nbsp;and STAC.&nbsp;You should also understand how to&nbsp;leverage&nbsp;application programming interfaces (APIs), web services, and distributed processing concepts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a skills\u00a0will\u00a0benefit\u00a0you no matter what industry you move to,\u00a0whether you are interested in\u00a0disaster response, climate analytics, or commercial supply chain analysis.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-skill-3-go-beyond-textbook-ai-build-geospatial-ai-models-and-use-ai-assistants\"><strong>Skill 3:\u00a0Go Beyond Textbook AI: Build\u00a0Geospatial AI\u00a0Models and Use\u00a0AI Assistants<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/geospatial-artificial-intelligence\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Geospatial AI<\/a>\u00a0is becoming part of the common conversation when talking about\u00a0geospatial technology.\u00a0Being\u00a0fresh from your\u00a0GIS\u00a0program, you may be asked to explain to your\u00a0colleagues\u00a0how\u00a0geospatial AI\u00a0models work, how they fail, and how to\u00a0use\u00a0them responsibly, especially\u00a0if you are using one\u00a0as part of your immediate project.\u00a0Industry leaders may expect that you are able to independently create training data and run\u00a0geospatial AI\u00a0workflows\u00a0right out of school.\u00a0During your studies,\u00a0take time to\u00a0create\u00a0your own\u00a0geospatial AI\u00a0model.\u00a0Pick a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/arcgis\/deep-learning-models\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pretrained\u00a0model<\/a> to\u00a0extract\u00a0a feature that you are familiar\u00a0with or\u00a0can look at directly.\u00a0This will help you\u00a0appreciate\u00a0the value of transfer\u00a0learning and\u00a0how much\u00a0effort and care\u00a0go\u00a0into\u00a0building\u00a0geospatial\u00a0AI\u00a0models, outside of a lab exercise.\u00a0Do you want to go the extra improve efficiency and automate annoying repetitive tasks.&nbsp;Just like&nbsp;how&nbsp;you can&nbsp;use ChatGPT or Copilot to&nbsp;provide&nbsp;practical lifestyle guidance or code generation, you can use GIS-based AI assistants to help you with traditional&nbsp;imagery&nbsp;search and&nbsp;content-generation tasks.&nbsp;The simplest way to start is to use an assistant inside an application or tool you are already using.&nbsp;There are many places where&nbsp;natural\u2011language&nbsp;AI models are already incorporated to help with common&nbsp;GIS&nbsp;tasks.&nbsp;Make sure you try&nbsp;out&nbsp;these tools before you graduate.&nbsp;For example, you can practice prompting an AI assistant using ArcGIS Online&nbsp;to interact with your map views, item details, or&nbsp;ArcGIS&nbsp;StoryMaps&nbsp;stories.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-s-kill-4-learn-how-to-talk-about-industry-domains\">S<strong>kill 4: Learn\u00a0How to Talk About\u00a0Industry Domains<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n<p>A domain is the combination of\u00a0<em>who<\/em>\u00a0uses the data,\u00a0<em>what decisions<\/em>\u00a0they need to make, and\u00a0<em>how<\/em>\u00a0geospatial science fits into their everyday work.\u00a0So, rather than focusing on a specific industry,\u00a0students should gain\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/lg\/industry\/government\/imagery-remote-sensing-gis-ebook?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cross-industry domain\u00a0proficiency<\/a>.\u00a0Here Way<\/h3>\n\n<p>Throughout my career,\u00a0I have had the opportunity to work closely with students and young professionals as an\u00a0adviser\u00a0and career coach.\u00a0I hate to hear\u00a0students\u00a0frustrated\u00a0around having the desire to do\u00a0more but\u00a0not\u00a0knowing\u00a0where to\u00a0focus.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0clear that it is getting harder to stand out
