JEPCO’s Digital Transformation: Enhancing Efficiency with GIS Tech
The Jordanian Electricity Power Company (JEPCO) is a publicly traded business that focuses on electricity distribution and retail supply in the nation of Jordan. Committed to long-term sustainability and safety, JEPCO faced several challenges, including accurately defining customer locations, precisely defining work areas for mobile staff and electricity network coverage, and developing a better understanding of the region’s infrastructure needs.

Challenge
JEPCO previously relied on a paperwork asset management process, which led to inefficiencies in workflows. Additionally, the company aimed to improve their entire system for customer response and service provision. First, JEPCO needed to modernize its asset management system with a fully digital one that enabled better collaboration. The company also needed to target prompt responses to customer complaints by defining their location and the nearest electricity station or maintenance team. This required an overview of complaints in each area to prioritize resource allocation. Staff also needed the ability to connect new customers to the correct electricity station, ensuring accuracy in the onboarding process. Finally, JEPCO needed the ability to determine the most efficient routes to improve its responsiveness to emergencies or errors.
JEPCO turned to geographic information system (GIS) technology to help address these concerns with a set of products that allowed them to geocode customer addresses, visualize the electricity network, and collect data more accurately and efficiently.

Solution
JEPCO turned to a suite of GIS technologies, including ArcGIS Desktop, Portal for ArcGIS, ArcGIS WebApp Builder, and ArcGIS Survey123. ArcGIS Desktop was instrumental in the conversion of paper maps to a digital GIS format, the geocoding of customer addresses, and the establishment of a robust geodatabase for electric network assets.
Portal for ArcGIS facilitated the seamless sharing of GIS data and the creation of user accounts for pertinent directorates. And JEPCO used ArcGIS WebApp Builder to develop web applications for the visualization of customer locations and the demarcation of field crews’ areas of operation.

Results
JEPCO’s implementation of GIS has resulted in a number of benefits, including:
- A more collaborative approach between the customer service center and maintenance teams.
- Significantly enhanced efficiency in mobile workers’ operations, resulting in faster and more effective responsiveness to issues.
- Reduced time required to address and resolve electrical faults as well as respond to emergencies or crises.
- Interactive maps of network coverage and gaps that staff can easily access for a more comprehensive situational awareness overview. This allows for proactive decision-making and strategic planning, as well as streamlined asset management and reduced errors.
- Customer addresses available in a central database that is updated daily, and all locations visually represented on a map, giving staff the ability to locate and address complaints precisely and promptly, improving customer service.
- The ability to predict and forecast complaints, customer needs, and maintenance in each operational area.

This initial successful implementation has led JEPCO to plan future ArcGIS product applications for a variety of initiatives and issues, from infrastructure management to asset maintenance. Additionally, the company intends to deploy ArcGIS GeoEvent Server for real-time monitoring and visualization of the data that mobile workers collect.
JEPCO’s strategic integration of GIS technology across its organization has revolutionized operations, leading to increased efficiency, improved customer service, and more informed decision-making.
