Frequently asked questions

ArcGIS Drone2Map is designed to be generic for use with all drones. Data can be collected by any flight control app, but we recommend using the Site Scan Flight LE app. When collecting data from a drone not supported by Site Scan Flight LE, there are two important details to know:

  • The drone must collect latitude, longitude, and altitude. Most commercially available drones automatically add this information to the image metadata (the Exif) header of each image file), and this is read by Drone2Map.
  • Drone2Map must also have information about the camera—specifically, the lens focal length and sensor size. Nearly all modern cameras are supported in an existing camera database and this database is updated frequently, so any new cameras not currently in the database should be supported within a short time frame. If your camera is not included in the database, Drone2Map will attempt to create the required information from information in the Exif header.

Getting Started with ArcGIS Drone2Map is a free course from Esri Training that focuses on best practices to capture and validate your drone imagery. Also, the tutorial Get Started with ArcGIS Drone2Map teaches you how to transform drone imagery into 3D GIS data. You'll use Drone2Map to add drone images to a map, create 3D data from 2D imagery, and share 3D data via ArcGIS Online. Additional Esri Training courses will be available in the future.

Requires foundational user type

What does "requires foundational user type" mean?

User types provide a flexible way for people to license the capabilities and apps they need to do their work in ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise.

Every subscription requires at least one foundational user type to activate and administer ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise. Creator and GIS Professional are foundational user types.

All dependent user types (Viewer, Editor, and Mobile Worker) must be purchased with at least one foundational user type or added to an existing organization. Dependent user types rely on a foundational user type to activate and administer ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise.

Add a foundational user type

Creator: Purchasing the Creator user type helps users get started with ArcGIS Online. Create maps, perform spatial analyses, and share results with stakeholders in a variety of ready-to-use apps.

GIS Professional: The GIS Professional user type includes ArcGIS Pro, the world's leading GIS software, and full access to ArcGIS Online.
