Esri Leads the Way in the GIS Software Market

A recent study titled Geographic Information Systems Markets and Opportunities highlights Esri as the world's leading GIS software company. The annual study is published by Daratech, Inc., a market research firm based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

"We at Esri are proud of the results of the study because we believe they not only reflect the hard work of our employees but also demonstrate the significant contributions of our user community," says Jack Dangermond, president, Esri. "By working with users in a number of industries, we continue to develop crosscutting and generic software tools and solutions that have significant impact."

Esri commanded 35.1 percent of the worldwide GIS software market in 1999 with nearly $300 million in revenues. For the GIS market as a whole, the total revenues generated in GIS software sales rose to $845 million in 1999, a healthy 12.8 percent increase.

Esri led in a number of key GIS software markets, capturing 72 percent of the GIS software market in research and education and holding 58 percent of the public sector GIS software market. In addition, the company maintained 49 percent of the transportation GIS software market and 41 percent of the GIS software market for marketing and sales. Esri also captured 56 percent of the GIS software market for UNIX workstations.

"We have worked vigorously to meet the demands of growing markets and I think that our work has paid off," says Linda Hecht, director of marketing, Esri. "We are as committed as ever to help more and more Businesses and organizations succeed using GIS."

Esri garnered 39 percent of worldwide core Business, which includes hardware, software, and services, for the public sector marketing and sales industry.

"Over the past three years, Esri has worked vigorously to rewrite its key software platform using IT-focused, standard technologies," adds Dangermond. "Esri has reengineered ArcInfo 8 and ArcIMS to be based on a new object-component architecture and using a host of industry or government standards such as SQL, TCP/IP, HTTP, XML, CORBA, COM, JAVA, and C++. We feel this embracing of a standards-based strategy will have a powerful impact on the dissemination of GIS in the software industry."
