ArcPad 6 Provides New Development Tool

ArcPad 6, Esri's mobile GIS technology, includes a new custom development tool, enhanced form controls, and support for internationalization Compaq iPAQ with ArcPad 6 screenshotand localization and continues to grow as a mobile client in the ArcGIS family of products.

Customization

The major goal of the ArcPad 6 release is to allow users to customize the software product using a new development tool. At version 6, ArcPad software's object model is exposed and accessible via scripts. Users are able to add and remove buttons on the user interface; modify existing toolbars; and create scripts, applets, DLLs, or plug-in modules for advanced customization such as support for new data formats. The ability to develop custom applications with ArcPad significantly enhances the usability of Esri's mobile solution.

New Form Controls

ArcPad 6 offers new controls for data collection forms that include a list box, radio button, up/down spin button, slider bar, and an image box to display image files. Lists for combo box and list box controls are improved with separate value and description fields. Users can also create separate forms for data collection and the Identify tool. Custom scripts can be used to set default values for fields and to perform validation of the data entered.

Internationalization and Localization

ArcPad 6 supports multibyte character set (MBCS) data stored in a shapefile attribute field as well as conversion between MBCS and UNICODE. Display of data in UNICODE, such as Japanese, Korean, and special European characters, is available depending on the device. Localized versions of ArcPad are included for a number of languages and countries.

Mobile Client for ArcGIS

Another important enhancement to ArcPad is the creation of ArcPad tools for ArcGIS 8.1. This allows users to extract, convert, and project their data using ArcGIS Desktop (ArcView, ArcEditor, ArcInfo). In its role as a wireless client to ArcIMS with support for feature services, ArcPad 6 will grow. Users can view and/or edit Map Notes stored on an ArcIMS server.

Availability

ArcPad 6 is available in the summer of 2001. ArcPad supports Windows CE 2.11, 2.12, and 3.0. ArcPad also runs on Windows 95/98, NT, and 2000 platforms.
