Esri Hong Kong to Develop Web Telecom Directory

Esri Hong Kong has won a major contract from Hong Kong Telecom Directories Limited to develop an Internet-based GIS application for the Hong Kong Yellow Pages.

The telecom database contains more than 80,000 company listings and provides a variety of information useful to both tourists and the general public such as shopping center locations, restaurants, and repair facilities.

The system being developed is based on MapObjects Internet Map Server technology. There are two phases to its implementation. Phase I involves data integration and basic mapping functionality, while Phase II will add GIS query and display capabilities as well as a detailed entertainment guide.

Phase I was completed in November 1998, and Phase II was completed in February 1999. The system is bilingual, providing both Chinese and English versions of the Hong Kong street map and directory down to building level.

Comments Dr. Winnie Tang, general manager of Esri Hong Kong, "This system provides the impetus for the development of other projects of this nature and serves as a milestone for Internet-based GIS development in Hong Kong."
