Computer-Assisted Mapping Made Easier

Maplex 3.3 Now Shipping

A significant next step in computer-assisted cartography, Maplex 3.3, is now shipping. Recently granted Millennium Product status by the United Kingdom (UK) Design Council for its successful innovations in mapping technology, Maplex is sophisticated, high-end cartographic design software for creating quality labeling and annotation text for map generation.

A result of years of extensive research, award-winning Maplex software substantially reduces cartographic production time. From its intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) to its powerful conflict resolution capabilities, Maplex makes it easier than ever to create labels and symbols for your map features.

Comments Esri President Jack Dangermond, "We are especially proud of such recent world-class Maplex customers as NIMA (see related article), the United States Postal Service, Thomas Bros. Maps, Universal Adcomm, Elections Canada, and Jimapco."

Enhancements available in version 3.3 include on-screen label editing capabilities such as moving/reshaping labels and adding leader lines. For those working with multiple data formats, version 3.3 reads ArcInfo coverages and ArcSDE layers as well as vector product format (VPF) data. A feature new to version 3.3 is the ability to output to MicroStation Design (.dgn), Computer Graphics Metafile (CGM), and most standard image data formats.

"Another plus for version 3.3 is that it is easily integrated with your existing systems and data formats," states Maplex Product Manager Clark Swinehart. "Since many cartographers already use ArcInfo, Maplex is the natural choice for a name placement and cartographic design solution. In addition, a particularly significant feature of Maplex is its ability to resolve conflicts between label placements."
