Introducing ArcSDE 8

ArcSDE 8 and ArcInfo 8 are designed to work together very closely. ArcSDE 8 is available in two editions: ArcSDE 8 Enterprise (formerly known as SDE) and ArcSDE 8 Extension to ArcInfo 8 (formerly known simply as ArcSDE). The media for both versions are distributed as part of ArcInfo 8, with the difference being how ArcSDE 8 Enterprise is bundled. ArcSDE 8 Enterprise includes a one-year evaluation license for ArcInfo 8. The ArcSDE 8 Extension to ArcInfo 8 is sold as a separately purchased extension to ArcInfo 8 that requires a keycode for installation.

ArcSDE is a spatial data application server that combines true client/server architecture with a set of software services to perform fast spatial operations on very large data sets. Key benefits include the ability to rapidly serve GIS data to a large number of users and simplified data management by integrating tabular and spatial data in a commercial database management system (DBMS) such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2, Informix, and Sybase.

ArcSDE 8, combined with ArcInfo 8, provides new functionality including versioning, direct editing of spatial data, and support for new data types including raster files and locators (addresses). In addition, multiuser ArcInfo 8 geodatabases are managed by ArcSDE 8. The geodatabase model is an object-oriented model that allows users to add behavior, properties, rules, and relationships to their data.

ArcSDE 8 will initially be released for Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server concurrently with ArcInfo 8. Existing SDE 3 users with current maintenance will automatically receive a copy of ArcInfo 8 as their out-of-the-box client application. ArcInfo 8 client applications no longer consume an ArcSDE connection license. For more information, call Esri at 1-800-447-9778 or visit www.esri.com/arcsde.
