Redlands, California—Do you know why opera prima donnas are famously difficult? Or how live theater delivers social commentary? From Page to Stage—Theater and Opera, the next Town & Gown Cultural Series event, will answer these questions and more. On Tuesday, March 16, at 5:30 p.m. at the Esri Conference Center, University of Redlands professors Doris Baizley and Marco Schindelmann will guide their audience on a behind-the-scenes tour of the sometimes mysterious workings of stage performance.

Baizley is the Lossett visiting professor and playwright in residence in the university’s Department of Theatre Arts. She is also a founder of L.A. Theatre Works and has authored numerous plays including Mrs. California; The Dyer’s Hand, which was included in the Playwright’s Festival of New Works at Sacramento’s River Stage Theatre in 2009; and Sister Kenny’s Children, which was commissioned by the History Theatre and opened in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 2010. Mrs. California, a provocative look at the rise of postwar consumer culture in the United States and the domestication of Rosie the Riveter, will play April 8–11 at the University of Redlands.

Schindelmann is an artist professor of voice in the university’s School of Music and director of the University Opera. A composer and performance artist, he has performed as a soloist throughout Europe and Japan and appeared with, among others, the Redlands New Music Ensemble. Schindelmann is currently codirecting the Mozart opera The Magic Flute, with local performances set for April 8–11 at Crafton Hills College Finkelstein Center.

From Page to Stage is part of the cultural series that Esri and the University of Redlands cosponsor through the Town & Gown organization. Upcoming events include the Wild & Scenic Environmental Film Festival on April 16, 2010, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and a presentation by Ed Stein, award-winning syndicated political cartoonist, on May 12, 2010, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. All three events are free and take place in the Esri Conference Center at 380 New York Street in Redlands.

To guarantee seating, attendees should register for the event on the Internet at www.esri.com/culturalseries or by calling 909-748-8011.
