CoastalDEM™ is a 1 arc second (~30 meter) horizontal resolution and continuous vertical resolution digital terrain model providing bare earth elevations for low-lying coastal areas globally. By contrast, NASA’s SRTM DEM provides elevation in one-meter increments, is strongly influenced by treetops and rooftops, and overestimates ground elevations by roughly 2 meters on average, setting up severe underestimation of coastal threats. Two meters is higher than most extreme coastal floods today and most sea level projections for tomorrow. By contrast, global and national error metrics indicate CoastalDEM™ has almost no bias and significantly lower error scatter than SRTM. It also outperforms other digital elevation models. CoastalDEM™ is based on rigorous peer-reviewed science – and costs pennies on the dollar versus commercial products which may have comparable vertical accuracy.
