On April 20, 2010, the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry began as the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded and sank in the Gulf of Mexico off the Louisiana coast. Over 4 million barrels of oil was released into the Gulf over a period of 87 days. In early May 2010, ES2 was contracted to provide Shoreline Cleanup Assessment Technique (SCAT) leadership services, through Polaris Applied Sciences, Inc. ES2 mobilized highly qualified and experienced oil spill response personnel to the Mobile, AL command center. Over the next four years, ES2 personnel surveyed thousands of miles of shoreline from Louisiana to Florida, assessed oiling conditions, developed treatment recommendations, and oversaw cleanup completion. To document the ES2 experience on the Deepwater Horizon project, this Esri Story Map was developed.
