Description:

Our spill model addresses product movement through surface water and lateral spread over terrain. Spill plumes are intersected with HCAs to identify could affect pipeline segments. Results can be saved to shapefiles to use with other mapping applications. FreemanGIS partnered with RCP, Inc. to develop this model that traces pipeline spills downstream and over land. The model factors in: - Slope, soil type, and land cover of local terrain. - Volume released at each spill point based on the pipe’s elevation, diameter, and flow rate prior to shut-in until draindown is complete. - Flow rate, channel width, and velocity of surface waterways that intersect the pipe or intersect lateral spread pathways from the pipe. The model is an extension to ArcGIS. Its tools are accessed through an ArcMap toolbar, where the commands use ArcEditor and Spatial Analyst functionality to render results. The model accepts operator-defined pipeline specs and outputs spill plumes as shapefiles that can be edited as needed to reflect known reality.
