The National Safety Council partnered with GeoMarvel to help implement their “Celebrate Lost Loved Ones” web application. The National Safety Council’s mission is to keep people safe “from the workplace to anyplace” — offering guidance to keep people safe and injury-free in the workplace, on the roadways, and in their communities. Their strong drive to protect people is captured by the four pillars of their mission: to keep people safe, to challenge the status quo, to be impactful, and to collaborate with others to build a strong community. GeoMarvel and the National Safety Council collaborated to develop the web application “Celebrate Lost Loved Ones”, a web map application for crowd-sourcing and bringing awareness to the opioid epidemic. The project started as an ArcGIS Story Map and has evolved into a web application that is embedded in their website. This project utilizes ArcGIS web maps, integration with a native website, anda Survey123 form to enable user submissions for web map data. GeoMarvel had previously helped the National Safety Council get their GIS capabilities off the ground, and GeoMarvel’s role in this engagement was to configure the application and help embed it on their website for public consumption. The application is public-facing and its data is submitted directly from users. Users have the option to just view the application and see celebrations and testimonials from family and friends for lost loved ones around the world. If desired, users can also add to the data in the application, by submitting their own celebration testimonial for anyone they know that has died from opioids.
