Description:

Battery storage refers to the use of rechargeable batteries to store electrical energy, typically generated from renewable sources. It stores electricity as chemical energy in batteries, which can be used as electrical energy later on. Battery storage systems store extra energy when it’s not needed and release it when needed. Electric transmission system operators require battery storage projects seeking to connect to the grid to undergo a series of feasibility and impact studies before they can be built. This process establishes what new transmission equipment or upgrades may be needed before a project can connect to the system and assigns the costs of that equipment. The lists of projects in this process are known as “interconnection queues.” LandGate sources interconnection queues from ISOs & RTOs. The interconnection queues are automated to update in sync with when an ISO & RTO publishes interconnection queue reports, reflecting any change to a queue record (e.g., change in status, change in projected in-service date, etc.) and the addition of new queues. Point of Interconnection (POI) to Interconnection Queue Association: Using proprietary tools, each queued battery storage project is associated with its point of interconnection. When a user selects a POI, all the associated queued projects are subsequently displayed. Queued Project Digitization: LandGate collects interconnection documents and leases from counties to identify the locations of queued battery storage projects and which parcels they have leased. Data Sources & Process - Collecting data from interconnection queue documents - Collecting feasibility studies, interconnection agreements, FERC applications, and other reference documents - Extracting project details—project name, project contact information, operator LLC, and technical details - Updating and automatically pulling into the project database daily LandGate Parent Company Association: LandGate analysts associate operator LLCs with parent organizations using state business records and SEC filings, recording these associations to build the LandGate Proprietary Database of Parent-Operator relationships.
