Sam O. Hirota, Inc.

Honolulu, HI, United States

Overview

We are a minority information services company providing civil engineering, land surveying, mapping & GIS services since 1963. We also specialize in digitizing, measuring, and modelling the real world via the latest 3D laser scanning and imaging hardware and software workflows. Over the past 62 years the firm has completed a wide range of projects throughout Hawaii, the Trust Territories and the South Pacific, serving Federal, State and local governments, and the private sector. As an Esri Silver Partner, SOH has access to the latest GIS software and training. This compelling combination has enabled the firm to remain a leader in the practical application of advanced GIS technology. Due to the US military requirement to deliver GIS products in Esri ArcMap/ArcGIS Desktop, almost all GIS work is performed using that product. However, due to its Esri Partner status, SOH has access to most of the software that Esri produces, including ArcGIS Pro. These “training and demo” licenses are invaluable for SOH GIS staff to keep abreast of evolving software capabilities and can be converted to commercial use licenses at any time.

Overview:

In the 1970s, the City and County of Honolulu put out an RFP that, along with land surveying and civil engineering, sought a long-term solution to its GIS needs. As SOH was on all three of the teams shortlisted for the project award, City officials asked SOH President Dr. Dennis Hirota who he would recommend. To Dr. Hirota, the choice was obvious, and he confidently advocated for the City to select Environmental Systems Research Institute (Esri), recently founded by Jack Dangermond in Redlands, California. The City chose Esri, and the relationship between the City and Esri, and between Dr. Hirota and Mr. Dangermond, has flourished ever since. As an Esri Silver Partner, SOH has access to the latest GIS software and training. This compelling combination has enabled the firm to remain a leader in the practical application of advanced GIS technology.
