The GIS industry is heavily reliant on access to accurate data. Yet ask a GIS manager to show you a catalog of all of his holdings, and he will go white as a ghost. Data are scattered across the desktop computers, servers, an old hard drive or just about anywhere. An estimated 35 percent to 50 percent of information is unavailable to the rest of the organization because it is locked in some offline repository that cannot be searched. If you know what data everyone in your organization has, you may well hit a gold mine in your own back yard. Think of being able to find duplicate data, eliminating the storage costs; or finding data before you purchase the same data or recreate the same project again; or just having the peace of mind that the data you publish is the best and most up to date you have.
