Butte County, located in northern California, has experienced many wildland fires that threatened both public safety and structures in recent history. However, nothing compared to the devastation to life and property caused by the November 2018 Camp Fire. County GIS staff faced many challenges in responding to this incident. Using GIS, with assistance and collaboration from many outside individuals and agencies, Butte County was able to provide vital information to the public and emergency staff working on response and recovery efforts through maps, web mapping, and mobile applications. Although recovery efforts are still in full swing, the County is already working on increasing emergency preparedness for the upcoming fire season.
