Esri India Awarded Contract for Hazard Mitigation Information SystemEsri India (NIIT-GIS Ltd.) has been selected to implement a hazard mitigation information system (HMIS) for the State of Andhra Pradesh. The system includes ArcInfo with ARC GRID, ARC NETWORK, and ArcScan extensions, and ArcView GIS, ArcView Spatial Analyst, and ArcView Network Analyst. The computing environment is Microsoft Windows 2000. This is part of a larger Andhra Pradesh hazard mitigation and emergency cyclone recovery project, partially funded by the World Bank. The overall project, estimated at $220 million (U.S.), is for the provision of a hazard management program, the restoration of damaged public infrastructure, and technical assistance for project implementation and management. Andhra Pradesh is India's fourth most populous state, with about 73 million inhabitants. It has densely populated districts, which extend 620 miles along the coastline of the Bay of Bengal and one of the most vulnerable regions in India to tropical storms. There have been a number of deadly tropical storms and cyclones in recent years. The 1996 cyclone alone had a substantial economic impact, with losses estimated at more than $1.5 billion (U.S.). This resulted in phenomenal damage to housing, municipal and rural infrastructure, agriculture, etc. The HMIS will aid in the overall recovery project goals that are to assist the State government to prepare and implement a hazard management program in high-risk areas and restore the public infrastructure lost in the 1996 disaster.
