Pasco Works with the Japanese Association of Surveyors

The Survey Academy Helps Spread GIS

Founded in 1951 and headquartered in Tokyo, the Japanese Association of Surveyors (JAS) is devoted to the advancement of surveying technologies and promotion of education and training in geoinformatics. Among its many efforts, JAS hosts the Survey Academy, which offers many educational programs and seminars aiming at the improvement and diffusion of surveying technologies. The principal of this academy is Dr. Toshiharu Murai, professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo.

In April 2001, Vice President Sadao Ohtake of Pasco Corporation (the Esri distributor in Japan) presented ArcView, ArcView Spatial Analyst, and ArcView Network Analyst (21 licenses each) to Dr. Murai for use by the Survey Academy.

The Survey Academy has been offering one-week training courses four times a year for the past two years. They are focused on the training of GIS engineers. Pasco has been actively supporting the Academy with ArcView and ArcView Spatial Analyst and cooperating with textbook preparation and instruction. Pasco's Tom Amemiya is the instructor.

The training courses have been quite popular, and a total of 2,000 printed textbooks have already been sold. There used to be only half the number of hardware and software available for the students, but now the Academy can provide one machine for every student.
