ArcInfo 8 Adds Unprecedented Flexibility and Customization
Developers Embrace ArcInfo 8
GIS technology is changing dramatically with the release of ArcInfo 8, Esri's professional GIS software. ArcInfo 8 is making sophisticated GIS analysis available to all types of users, from the long-term GIS professional to the casual GIS user. Esri Business partners have joined the pursuit of this technology and are developing their own applications with ArcInfo 8.
As a tool for developers, ArcInfo 8 has added unprecedented flexibility and customization capabilities that reach far beyond that of other GIS technology. With ArcInfo 8, users can customize the entire software environment, with methods ranging from simple menu-driven customization that requires no programming to object-component programming for the advanced developer. It is at the advanced level where Esri developers are working to provide applications and extensions that enhance the power of ArcInfo 8.
Esri developers bring their industry and development expertise to their project work and are dedicated to providing customized GIS applications to the growing end user community. Esri developers create extension tools for Esri software, applications for industry specific markets, and specialized interfaces to existing Esri technology.
Here's a sneak peek at what some Esri developers are doing with ArcInfo 8.
ABB
Advant System
ABB is a global technology and engineering company serving customers in power transmission and distribution; automation; oil, gas, and petrochemicals; industrial products and contracting; and financial services. ABB Sweden has been working with Esri on an application that uses ArcInfo 8 software's ArcObjects to implement a geographic component within ABB's next generation process control software called the Advant System.

Azteca Systems, Inc.
Cityworks
Azteca is an Esri developer focused on creating GIS-centric infrastructure and work management applications. Cityworks, formerly known as Pipeworks, is now an extension to ArcInfo 8. Cityworks provides public works and utility departments with the ability to perform traditional customer call tracking, service request dispatching, and work order management functions with the added power and benefit of geographic analysis. City Works allows Esri users to easily add all of these capabilities to their Esri GIS.

GeoAnalytics, Inc.
GeoAnalytics, Inc., is an Esri developer that specializes in geographic and land information technology management services and is dedicated to serving client needs, resources, and priorities through critical analysis. GeoAnalytics is developing an application that will provide functionality to coordinate and vary the display behavior of TIGER Road and Census Block data layers over a range of cartographic scales.

Leica Geosystems
ArcSurvey
ArcSurvey is the first result of joint efforts between Esri and Leica Geosystems to develop integrated software solutions that guarantee a seamless data flow from field surveying to ArcInfo 8. ArcSurvey is an extension to ArcInfo 8 designed to collect, store, process, and maintain survey data including TPS and GPS measurements. The survey tools enable the interactive graphic visualization and processing of measurements within ArcMap. Because data coming from the survey sensors is represented graphically, the user can check the received data immediately.

LizardTech
MrSID
Esri developer LizardTech is focused on publishing innovative software that provides users of all levels instant access to digital images and multimedia content. LizardTech's MrSID (Multi-Resolution Seamless Image Database) technology is one of the most advanced image compression software products on the market today. Esri and LizardTech are teaming together to provide fully integrated MrSID compression capability inside of every copy of ArcInfo 8. This will provide ArcInfo 8 users with a complete solution for working with enormous imagery and a robust tool to better manage their vital raster data sources.

Northwest Software Engineering and Avista Utilities
Northwest Software Engineering, Inc., and Avista Utilities are partnering to produce an enterprise GIS suite of AM/FM applications utilizing the enhanced functionality of ArcInfo 8. The application will be for electric design and outage management and will include a custom set of COM objects to model electric equipment, including complex edges and junctions. Custom functionality for sketching and editing will also be integrated into the functionality with current work management systems.

NovaLIS
Parcel Editor 8
Parcel Editor 8, to be released with ArcInfo 8.1, is an ArcMap extension used to maintain spatial data associated with land records including parcel, land use, and administrative boundaries. It will use the new ArcSurvey extension to ArcInfo to manage survey measurements and store these in an ArcSurvey GeoDatabase instead of storing them as attributes of arcs. A prototype of Parcel Editor 8 has been built in ArcInfo 8 with a custom ArcMap user interface very similar to Parcel Editor 3.3. The NovaLIS COGO spreadsheet, split, and merge wizards have been rewritten to take advantage of ArcMap software's advanced object technology.

Telcordia Technologies
Network Engineer
Telcordia Technologies provides software applications and services to the telecommunications industry. Telcordia Technologies is creating Network Engineer, a GIS-based network engineering design and documentation tool that will run on ArcInfo 8. Network Engineer provides the capability for the inventory of a full array of fiber network plant equipment, copper network plant equipment, and supporting structure data that can be used to interactively build a fully connected network. This customizable software can be an invaluable tool for all fiber- and copper-based providers, whether they are building new networks or maintaining existing ones.
