Around the World with Internet Mapping

To keep you up to date, each issue of ArcNews discusses some of the latest Internet locations using Esri's software. Automated Information Mapping Service (AIMS) Mapping, Johnson County, Kansas

Johnson County, Kansas, recently implemented MapObjects Internet Map Server, which provides interactive mapping solutions to area residents. The general mapping application enables users to browse and view County property features. Identifying a property returns the address, tax, and appraisal information at the bottom of the page. Input boxes enable users to search for a specific parcel number or find an address. Monuments, some planimetrics, and aerial photographs are available on the County monuments mapping application. There is also a storm water management project and a wastewater mapping application available to online users.

Communication and Orientation Services for Disabled People in Muenster (KOMM)

In 1997, Muenster was the first city in Germany to provide the public with an interactive street map for disabled people. This service represents the first module within the KOMM project, a joint venture chaired by the Institute for Geography at Westphalia Wilhelms University Muenster and the independent municipal Siverdes foundation of Muenster. Powered by ArcView Internet Map Server, this site, which is in German, provides local information about organizations in Muenster that are wheelchair accessible or offer special services to the disabled. There is information about access to the City's pubs and restaurants and the location of public restrooms. Also included are medical services, hotels, and points of interest, as well as recreational and cultural facilities. The width of doors, the extent of barrier-free areas, and the locations of elevators supplement the location information. The elderly, people with strollers, and temporarily disabled individuals will also find this site useful.

Digital Atlas of Styria

The Digital Atlas of Styria, Austria, is a strategic tool presenting dynamic basemaps of the area on the Internet. The application is powered by ArcView Internet Map Server, and the atlas can be easily integrated into other Web applications. The digital atlas is popular with users because it is easy to use and has a powerful search function capable of locating small villages and farms as well as City streets. Although the government of Styria offers an extensive Web site that includes information about politics, education, culture, health and social services, the environment, tourism, and traffic, one-third of all of the site's hits involve GIS and the digital atlas. There are plans to expand the GIS portion of this Web site.

Maine Office of GIS

Maine's State government has accelerated its GIS activities by fully implementing a State-wide GIS coordinated by the Office of GIS. The office manages the State's GIS database to maximize data sharing and compatibility between local, state, and national programs; develops GIS standards and guidelines; provides quality control services; and maintains public "one-stop shopping" for digital geographic data. The online Internet mapping feature uses ArcView Internet Map Server and enables users to open several types of views and pan, zoom, and print the view. Legislative districts, public lands, public utilities, school districts, water sampling sites, and wireless telecommunications towers are some of the views available. Users can search features based on the name or attributes, display extended information about features, and display documents that are linked to map characteristics.

Neighborhood Knowledge Los Angeles

Neighborhood Knowledge Los Angeles (NKLA) is a Web site dedicated to helping prevent housing and neighborhood conditions from deteriorating. NKLA provides tools for accessing property and neighborhood data and works with neighborhood residents, community organizations, and policy makers to mobilize support for community improvement in the Los Angeles area. The site uses ArcView GIS and MapObjects Internet Map Server. The Community Information Technology Center (CITC) in the UCLA Advanced Policy Institute maintains the server. Users must register to use the site, but it is free of charge.

Planning South Australia's Maps Online

Planning SA is an agency of the Department for Transport, Urban Planning, and the Arts within the south Australian government. It is responsible for administering the planning and development of south Australia and is the State government's principal adviser on planning and development strategies, proposals, and policy issues. Maps Online demonstrates GIS within a planning environment and provides a simple point-and-click user interface via a Web browser enabling access to planning-related information. The GIS component is ArcView Internet Map Server. There are several data sets available for each planning region in south Australia, and users can browse, explore, and query these maps.
