Graduation Ceremonies for GIS Students

The Federal Bureau of Prisons-Atwood Camp held its first annual graduation ceremonies on September 15, 2000 (with the second scheduled for July 1, 2001), and the students participating in the GIS training program were recognized for their accomplishments. Students were awarded certificates for completing Esri authorized training to Introduction to ArcView GIS, Introduction to Avenue, and Working with ArcView Spatial Analyst. Students in the class also received Certificates of Achievement in Digital Cartography from the Kentucky Geological Survey for their contribution to the Digital Atlas of Ground Water in Kentucky. In addition, two students received certificates to Distinctive Achievement in Geographic Information Systems from the University of Kentucky for successfully completing 500 hours in the GIS program, and one student received a certificate of Outstanding Achievement in Geographic Information Systems from the University of Kentucky for successfully completing 1,000 hours in the GIS program.

The GIS program at the Atwood Camp was established through a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Bureau of Prisons and the University of Kentucky, with the support of Esri. Inmates in the program receive authorized training in Introduction to ArcView GIS, Introduction to Avenue, and Working with ArcView Spatial Analyst. Esri contributes all software and instructional materials for this unique program. The computer laboratory accommodates eight students. Dan Carey, an authorized Esri instructor, and Steve Cordiviola, both from the University's Kentucky Geological Survey, are the volunteer instructors. The response to the program has been enthusiastic.
