ArcEurope Data Family

Esri has developed the ArcEurope data family, a comprehensive data product for Europe to provide useful basemap and demographic data for desktop applications. ArcEurope consists of two components from two main data sources: ArcEurope BaseMap, a series of basemap layers from AND Data B.V. and ArcEurope Demographics, a set of demographic and marketing data from GfK Marktforschung. These components are available together or separately.

ArcEurope BaseMap
ArcEurope BaseMap is a comprehensive set of basemap data for Europe (from 1:250,000-scale source materials) supplied by AND Data that provides high-quality layers for cartographic presentation and basic geographic analysis. This data includes country and province boundaries, water features, urbanized areas, railroads, a connected road network, and more than 28,000 named places. This data is being packaged in shapefile form with associated projection and legend files for ArcView GIS as well as a help file that documents the individual data layers.

ArcEurope Demographics
GfK Marktforschung, an international company (Germany), calculates a purchasing power index from the data they collect that is an indicator of an area's purchasing power relative to a larger region. A separate index is calculated for eastern and western Europe. This purchasing power index along with population, population by sex, population by age groups, births, deaths, households, size of households, and stock of dwellings are part of ArcEurope Demographics.

Correction
The article "ArcView GIS 3.2 Now Shipping" on page 7 of the Fall 1999 issue of ArcNews shows a map of Europe identified as being included in the Esri Data & Maps CDs. In fact, the data shown in the map is not part of that CD set and is actually part of the ArcEurope BaseMap and is provided by AND Data B.V.
