The ninth annual GIS Day was celebrated globally on November 14, 2007. From open houses and GIS labs to map gallery competitions and GIS quizzes, GIS users around the world dedicated countless hours to showcase the many ways GIS technology is making a difference in our world.
Esri Romania celebrated GIS Day this year by organizing a summer school program in cooperation with its partners GeoEcoMar, Trimble, and Euromap. From August 13-17, a group of 13 university student researchers and several Esri Romania employees embarked on an exciting environmental research journey of the Danube Delta aboard GeoEcoMar's Halmyris Floating Laboratory, a naval vessel designed for studies on the delta.
Using image processing, GPS, and GIS, students analyzed the changes in the St. George River over the last 10 years, determined population dynamics based on these changes, and developed a tourist course on the river using the analysis results. The students came from various academic disciplines, including geography, environmental engineering, IT, and sociology, which helped form a truly diverse scientific group.
Distinguished guests of this special educational program spoke about topics including hydrology, the use of satellite images in GIS analysis, and river sedimentation processes. Web pages, posters, brochures, and other marketing materials designed by the student teams were presented October 12 during the Esri Romania User Conference.
