ArcGIS Topographic Mapping: Announcing updates in ArcGIS Pro 3.6 and ArcGIS Enterprise 12.0

By Josue

The latest releases of ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Enterprise bring significant changes to topographic mapping including production workflows. With the consolidation of ArcGIS Defense Mapping and ArcGIS Production Mapping into the new ArcGIS Topographic Mapping extension, users can expect streamlined tools, enhanced workflows, and improved integration across the platform. Here’s a breakdown of what’s new and why it matters for your topographic production needs.

ArcGIS Pro 3.6

ArcGIS Pro 3.6 debuts the ArcGIS Topographic Mapping extension, which unifies capabilities from the Defense Mapping and Production Mapping extensions. This means a more cohesive experience for users managing topographic data, editing, and quality control. Manual workflow tasks in ArcGIS Pro can now be configured as part of topographic production workflows, leveraging the services-based ArcGIS Workflow Manager for seamless data collection and editing.

Topographic Production toolbox

The Topographic Production toolbox has been expanded with several new tools and enhancements:

New Tools:

  • Apply Element ValuesAutomatically applies values from the Guide To Numbered Features surround element in a layout to the corresponding feature attributes.
  • Download Job FilesEnables downloading and extracting job files from a topographic production server for manual operations during workflow steps.
  • Update Topographic Production Service DatabaseUpdates the database used by the Topographic Production Service instance.
  • Upload Job FilesAllows uploading packaged job files to a topographic production server during workflow steps.

Enhanced Tools:

ArcGIS Enterprise 12.0

The Topographic Mapping server extension in ArcGIS Enterprise 12.0 introduces several enhancements and workflow integrations:

  • Service-based workflowsTopographic production workflows for data collection, editing, and quality control are now built using the services-based ArcGIS Workflow Manager.
  • New Topographic Production Manager (TPM) appThe TPM web app replaces the older Production Manager application, offering a modern interface for managing workflows and production tasks.

Topographic Production Service

The Topographic Production Service capabilities have been expanded and now include:

  • A richer set of workflow resources for integration with services-based Workflow Manager.
  • New endpoints for managing projects, task groups, and tasks.
  • Product definitions now feature a new definitionType property, allowing for more granular filtering.
  • The query operation can now return jobs based on job type, such as workflow jobs versus map product jobs.

Product data files: Simplified installation and industry alignment

With the consolidation of extensions, there is now a single product file installer for ArcGIS Topographic Mapping in ArcGIS Pro and in ArcGIS Enterprise. Updates to rule files and map templates ensure alignment with industry data model schema specifications, supporting a range of schemas and map products, including:

  • Topographic Data Store (TDS)
  • Multinational Geospatial Co-Production Program (MGCP)
  • Joint Operations Graphic (JOG)
  • Evasion Chart (EVC)
  • Tactical Pilotage Chart (TPC)
  • Operational Navigation Chart (ONC)

Why these updates matter

These enhancements are designed to streamline topographic mapping workflows, improve integration across ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Enterprise, and ensure compliance with industry standards. Whether you’re managing data collection, editing, or quality control, the new ArcGIS Topographic Mapping extension and its tools offer a more unified and efficient experience.
