What's new in ModelBuilder (October 2025)

By Jian Lange and Halle Martinucci

Since ModelBuilder officially launched in Map Viewer in June 2025, many GIS professionals have adopted the intuitive no-code approach to automating analysis workflows directly on the web. Today, we are excited to announce that the ArcGIS Online October 2025 release brings new capabilities that make building models even easier. Here are a couple of highlights:

Calculate Field Tool

Calculating values for new or existing fields is a fundamental step in managing and analyzing GIS data. It allows you to derive meaningful information—such as ratios, categories, or standardized values—that supports deeper analysis and informed decision-making.

With this release, the new Calculate Field tool is now available in ModelBuilder. You can use SQL expressions to populate or update field values as part of your automated workflows.

Support for Model Variables

The ability to add and modify model variables makes it easier to update model inputs, such as datasets or tool parameters, across one or multiple tools in a model. This enhancement offers greater flexibility and reusability of models, enabling users to customize workflows quickly by iterating different parameters. Users can add or change variables in models, making it simpler to customize workflows for different situations.

We want your feedback!
