Simplifying metadata: Introducing a new style, Dublin Core+

By Laura Busolo

Providing detailed information about an item empowers viewers to make informed decisions, enhances comprehension, and improves item discoverability. ArcGIS supports a variety of metadata styles, enabling organizations to choose one that best fits their members for authoring metadata.

To begin, administrators can enable and configure metadata settings for their organization. Then select Dublin Core+ as the organization’s metadata style. This allows item owners to edit metadata using this style directly from the item page.

Each metadata style has numerous fields, each with specific required elements. Although organizations may have distinct metadata needs, we introduced a simplified metadata style, Dublin Core+, in the June 2025 update of ArcGIS Online. This style features a streamlined set of essential elements for populating item metadata.

Adopting Dublin Core+

Leveraging Dublin Core+ as a metadata style, can significantly enhance your organization’s workflows. It not only supports compliance but also fosters efficiency. This supports better information management overall. Lets briefly take a look at some key benefits for using it when authoring metadata:

  • Streamlined compliance: Organization members can easily meet the metadata requirements, ensuring consistency and adherence to standards.
  • Simplified metadata entry: With a limited number of required metadata elements, users can quickly populate necessary fields without feeling overwhelmed.
  • Improved discoverability: The use of a simple metadata style enhances item discoverability, making it easier for users to find and utilize important data that has metadata.
  • Streamlined metadata management: The limited number of required metadata fields helps in reducing the time and effort needed for data authoring and organization.
  • Improved metadata editing experience: Enhances user experience by making resources easier to find and navigate.
  • Consistency: A simplified style facilitates consistent metadata practices across various projects and teams in the organization.

Conclusion

In summary, you don’t have to use Dublin Core+. You can select any metadata style that aligns with your organization’s needs. Dublin Core+ provides a simplified and supported metadata format that helps ensure compliance. Starting with the June 2025 update of ArcGIS Online, Dublin Core+ is set as the default metadata style for your organization.
