Get Ready for the Next Generation of ArcGIS Survey123

By Chris LeSueur

A New Chapter for Survey123:
Coming in 2026

ArcGIS Survey123 has long been a trusted solution for organizations that rely on smart forms and accurate data collection. Over the years, it has powered countless workflows—from environmental monitoring to asset inspections—helping teams capture data efficiently in the field. But as technology evolves and user expectations grow, it’s time for Survey123 to take a bold step forward.

Last June we announced the Suvey123 team is working on a next generation of the Survey123 field app.  This new app will provide a modernized experience designed to make data collection faster, easier, and more powerful than ever before. This isn’t just an update—it’s a reimagining of how Survey123 can serve your needs today and in the future. As we approach its release, we encourage you to get ready for these exciting changes and stay tuned for more updates.

Why Build a Next Generation App?

The inspiration for the next generation Survey123 comes from listening to you, our users. You told us what works, what doesn’t, and what you need to succeed in the field. We heard requests for simpler onboarding, better mapping tools, and features that make complex surveys easier to manage. We also recognized the need to align with modern technology standards and deliver a more intuitive experience.

What’s in the Next Generation Survey123

The next generation field app introduces a fresh design, but the changes go deeper than aesthetics. We’ve focused on making the app easier to use while adding powerful capabilities for advanced workflows.

Here are a few of the highlights…

  • A simplified onboarding experience that gets new users up and running quickly
  • Enhanced mapping capabilities with support for custom projections and custom webmaps
  • Support for advanced input, including Apple Pencil
  • Support for light and dark mode in the Survey123 field app and Connect
  • Updates to the user experience to better align with current ArcGIS applications
  • More…

Tabular View for Repeats

One of the most exciting additions is the new tabular view for repeat questions. This is the #1 requested feature on the Esri Ideas for Survey123. If you’ve ever worked with surveys that include repeated questions—such as inspections, inventories, or multi-part questionnaires—you know how challenging it can be to manage multiple entries.

The tabular view changes that. It organizes repeated entries into a clean, spreadsheet-like format, making it easy to review, edit, and add data without losing context. This feature is a game-changer for workflows that involve high-volume data collection.

Field teams can quickly scan multiple entries, reduce errorsand improve productivity—all while maintaining the flexibility that Survey123 is known for. This innovation is set to transform how users approach repeat questions and will elevate the overall field data collection experience.

Roadmap and Migration Support

We know that moving to a new app can feel daunting, so we’re committed to making the process as smooth as possible.

When the next generation Survey123 is released, we will not automatically replace your current Survey123 app (Survey123 Classic).  There will be a transition time where both the next generation Survey123 app and the classic app will be available, and they can run side-by-side on the same device so you can migrate at your own pace without disruption.

We’ve already launched a public beta in September 2025, and the feedback has been invaluable. The first  release of the next-generation Survey123 is planned for Q1 2026, with quarterly updates to follow. With each release we will move closer to feature parity with the current app while introducing new capabilities.

Migration tools will help you assess readiness and update existing surveys with ease. During the beta testing process our Early Adopter Community will remain a hub for feedback and collaboration.

Looking ahead…the next generation of Survey123 is just the beginning. We’re working on deeper integration with QuickCapture for unified workflows, AI powered data collection, and enhanced support for GNSS receivers
