Edit survey responses in Experience Builder

By Chase Fisher

Hello Everyone,

Today, we’ll explore how to use ArcGIS Survey123 within ArcGIS Experience Builder to streamline survey population with just a click on the map.

Imagine this: you can easily edit an ArcGIS Survey123 response by clicking on a map feature. This action will open the associated survey, allowing you to make changes. Alternatively, you can click on a map feature to automatically populate a new survey with the selected feature’s data. Or, simply view the Survey123 linked to a feature—it’s that easy! Let me walk you through it.

Let’s dive in.

  1. First, open ArcGIS Experience Builder from your ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise Org app launcher.

2. Click “+ Create new”

3. Choose the Pocket Template and click Create

Now that we have made our Experience Builder Application, let’s configure it. We need to select a new map. Let’s change the default map to a map you have that either contains the Survey123 Data you want to edit or has data in it you would like to pass on to Survey123.

(***If you don’t already have one you can edit the name of your experience builder application on the top left, and save it on the top right. Go create the map, and come back to this Blog.***)

4. Now select the map in the center of the screen. In the dialog box on the right, click on “Select map

5. In an Experience Builder App you must add data you want to work with. First, click on “Add new data” at the bottom, and then once you select the map you want to work with it will come up on your list. Now select the map you chose to replace the default map.

In this case, I am going to select a street light inventory and create a simple Survey123 that will auto-populate with information about the street light and also allow me to submit additional information.

6. Now scroll to the right and click on the “+” to add a new widget.

7. Select the Survey widget.

8. Select the Survey Icon

9. Now you get to choose either an existing Survey123 or Create a new one. In this case, I am going to select an existing one I have already made that I will be passing through Street Light Information to.

Now That my Survey is loaded I have many options on appearance and Mode… I can “Submit a new record” “Edit an existing record” or “View an existing record” I also have the option to send data to this survey.

I am going to leave the appearance the same use the “Submit a new record” mode and also enable “Send data to this survey”

10. As seen below starting with the mode and then on to, send data to survey, the dialog box will expand asking you to select a map and also a source layer that you will use to send data to the survey. After that, all you do is match the field to the question in the survey you would like the data to pass through to.

Once you have connected all your fields to your question you are ready to save and test…

Keep in mind you may need to repeat the process for tablets and mobile phones at the top of the screen…

Once you save you can try live view and or publish and try in a new browser…

Selecting on the street light auto-populates the survey with Manufacture, Height, and Zone, now I can add notes and submit the record… If you were editing an existing survey all the information would auto-populate you could manipulate it how you see fit and submit it…

If you are submitting a new survey and just passing through information from the map feature… You may want the x,y of the selected location to be the x,y of your new survey point…. For this to happen there is one thing you must do. You will need to add a map question to your survey123, you can hide that question from the survey so as to not to confuse the submitter.

Then you will need to make a connection between the *Shape(Point) of the feature on the WebMap and the new Map Question on your survey. This will pass through the x, and y of the item on the map and make it the x, and y of the item in the survey123.

I know this was brief… However, I hope this gives you some food for thought…

Keep up the good work!!!

Until Next Time…
