Dr. Heather King, John Glover, and Dr. Lillian Larsen
September 16, 2024 | 5:30 p.m.–6:30 p.m.
In 1993, Octavia E. Butler published Parable of the Sower, a dystopian coming-of-age novel set in Southern California in 2024. As we experience the future Butler envisioned, her depiction of environmental collapse, political disintegration, and—ultimately—hope in community continues to be highly relevant. Students at the University of Redlands and Crafton Hills College are exploring the novel as part of their Campus Reads program, and the broader Redlands community is encouraged to join the conversation.
Dr. Heather King will discuss the grant project and provide a framework for reading Butler's science fiction novel. Dr. Lillian Larsen will offer insights into the religion Butler creates in the novel, whose central tenet is “God is Change.” Dr. John Glover will present the ArcGIS map he developed, which plots the journey of the novel’s central characters along with historical and environmental contexts.
