I use GIS to map groundwater contamination plumes in the San Gabriel Basin. I believe that GIS is the future of utilities. It is helping us work towards a more sustainable and economical future where all people can have access to water, electricity, and basic needs. My advice is to—for the sake of your heart, soul, and sanity—believe in your dreams and work hard to pursue them.

I use GIS as a way to connect spatial data to real-world issues. My internship at the US Geological Survey, the largest civilian mapping agency, strengthened my GIS interest. I had the opportunity to work in a research-driven environment at the NASA Ames Research Center, a hub of innovation that encourages scientific exchange between USGS and NASA. My advice is to learn by doing and stay committed to continuous learning.

As a GIS Developer at Map I.T. LLC, I leverage GIS every day to deliver practical solutions for clients across a diverse range of sectors, from large educational institutions to private enterprises.  I would highly recommend taking the time to learn basic Python and how to apply it to GIS workflows. Python is widely accessible, with numerous free online resources that allow you to learn at your own pace. Once you have a solid foundation, ArcGIS Pro offers multiple ways to automate workflows, which can provide significant efficiency gains. 

I use GIS as both an engineering discipline and an art form. My work begins with structure, designing schemas, building data foundations, aligning workflows, defining boundaries, and creating systems that can scale across complex operations. My biggest advice is to build trust and build community. Your network is your resilience and it will carry you through both the high points and the hard resets in this field.

As a Photogrammetric Technician at the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), I use GIS every day to help build accurate, high-quality mapping products that support transportation planning, design, and safety. My advice is to be curious, stay teachable, and don't be afraid to take the first step, even if you don't have everything figured out. Some of the best opportunities in my career came from saying yes to learning something new, asking questions, and seeking mentorship.

With over 10 years of experience in urban planning, I deliver high-quality solutions for expropriation projects, urban design, and technical team leadership. I am passionate about creating sustainable and inclusive urban environments that enhance the quality of life for the residents and the economic potential for the investors. I have contributed to several projects that involved the survey, classification, and development of informal settlements, local markets, and new cities in Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

I am a water resource engineer who uses GIS to build data flows and web applications for water utilities, and most recently I've been working to programmatically identify and replace lead pipes across the country. My best advice is to periodically evaluate new and better ways to accomplish things you've previously done in your craft. With GIS, there are many ways to produce the desired output but sometimes you can save your future self time and effort with practiced and well thought out methodology. You're doing something right if you look back at something you did a year ago and feel a sense of "I can't believe I did it that way"!

As a Digital Twin Lead, I use GIS extensively to bridge the gap between geospatial data and BIM in the AEC industry. My advice to young professionals is to focus on continuous learning and adaptability. The industry is constantly evolving, and staying updated with the latest technologies and trends is crucial. Always maintain a balance between ambition and patience—progress may take time, but consistent effort and a clear vision will lead to long-term success.

My advice to young professionals is clear: GIS is more than just a tool—it's a powerful way to make decisions and solve problems. The best way to learn GIS is by doing, so dive in, enjoy the process, and take on as many small projects as possible.

My best advice is to not be afraid to get started, because you have to start somewhere. Dive into real-world applications of GIS as soon as you can, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes.

I help people working in the utility space upgrade their GIS to ArcGIS Pro and implement ArcGIS Utility Network. I also teach an undergraduate-level introductory GIS class at a local university and do outreach for the GIST programs at a local community college. My advice is: don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Apply for that job even if you don't meet every single requirement. Present your research at a conference even if you are not a professional at public speaking.

Then, apply your knowledge with internships, personal projects, or volunteer work.

As a student for 6 years pursuing GIS as I earned my Bachelor's and Master's degrees I have used GIS through several different Esri products. I enjoy performing field testing and customer workflow evaluations to ensure product quality and release readiness. My advice is to learn about new advancements in GIS through networking at major conferences like the Esri User Conference and Dev Summit. They are huge platforms for young professionals to shine and build their career.

I am the GIS Specialist for McLean County, where I manage the county’s GIS users and needs and assist with complex GIS projects. I am always looking to create GIS projects that enhance McLean County, as well as try new analysis, deep learning, and cartographic techniques. My advice to young professionals is to not worry if your GIS journey is not linear. GIS is such a vast, ever-changing field, and there is no one "right" way to GIS.

My advice is to find classes that interest and challenge you, use your professors as resources, look at other people’s work for new GIS inspiration and ideas, and network with other GIS professionals to learn how they do their jobs and what opportunities are available. Be sure to create a professional online portfolio to showcase your work.

Majoring in geodesign allows me to incorporate GIS, spatial sciences, architecture, urban planning, and social equity into my projects. My best advice is to not be afraid to talk to people and put yourself out there. Go to events, search for internships, talk to your professors, and use all the free resources your university offers.

However, as I put myself out there, I figured out that the little I thought I knew was more than enough. Just face your fear and put yourself there and keep putting yourself out there.
