I work for a survey and engineering firm that embraces GIS and uses it to improve existing workflows to better serve clients. I use GIS to manage projects, be more efficient and accurate, gain a better understanding of project areas, and more. My advice is to embrace your newness. GIS is all about problem-solving. You may have an idea no one else has come up with. Ask questions and offer your creative solutions. A good manager will listen and engage with them.

I help people working in the utility space upgrade their GIS to ArcGIS Pro and implement ArcGIS Utility Network. I also teach an undergraduate-level introductory GIS class at a local university and do outreach for the GIST programs at a local community college. My advice is: don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Apply for that job even if you don't meet every single requirement. Present your research at a conference even if you are not a professional at public speaking.

My advice is to master the fundamentals and embrace hands-on practice. Immerse yourself in GIS software and concepts like spatial analysis and data management. Then, apply your knowledge with internships, personal projects, or volunteer work.

As a student for 6 years pursuing GIS as I earned my Bachelor's and Master's degrees I have used GIS through several different Esri products. I enjoy performing field testing and customer workflow evaluations to ensure product quality and release readiness. My advice is to learn about new advancements in GIS through networking at major conferences like the Esri User Conference and Dev Summit. They are huge platforms for young professionals to shine and build their career.

I am the GIS Specialist for McLean County, where I manage the county’s GIS users and needs and assist with complex GIS projects. I am always looking to create GIS projects that enhance McLean County, as well as try new analysis, deep learning, and cartographic techniques. My advice to young professionals is to not worry if your GIS journey is not linear. GIS is such a vast, ever-changing field, and there is no one "right" way to GIS.

I lead the Geographical Society at Lahore College, organizing annual GIS events designed to actively engage young female geographers and encourage their participation in GIS-related activities. My advice is to not panic if you are unable to absorb all the GIS knowledge in the beginning. Eventually it will transform into curiosity and a thirst for more knowledge.

As a GIS Administrator, I support GIS users, manage servers and databases, visualize data, and build GIS solutions for those who don’t have the time or expertise. I also provide GIS solutions and data visualization for Blue Water GIS. My advice is to find classes that interest and challenge you, use your professors as resources, look at other people’s work for new GIS inspiration and ideas, and network with other GIS professionals to learn how they do their jobs and what opportunities are available. Be sure to create a professional online portfolio to showcase your work.

I am a senior at University of Southern California (USC) majoring in geodesign and pursuing a minor in sociology. Majoring in geodesign allows me to incorporate GIS, spatial sciences, architecture, urban planning, and social equity into my projects. My best advice is to not be afraid to talk to people and put yourself out there. Go to events, search for internships, talk to your professors, and use all the free resources your university offers.

I’m a graduate student from North Carolina Central University and two-time Esri student assistant. I used to feel I wasn’t qualified for the opportunities I had. However, as I put myself out there, I figured out that the little I thought I knew was more than enough. Just face your fear and put yourself there and keep putting yourself out there. Do as many things as possible wherever possible. You never know exactly what you do that stands out to others that will lead to the opportunity or moment you’ve been looking for.

My best advice to young professionals is build a strong foundation and solid understanding of the fundamental concepts and principles of GIS. I help develop web application tools for clients who need another way to manage their projects. My best advice is go after anything you are passionate about or have an idea on. I am conducting lectures for students; researching more about new technologies in GIS and remote sensing; going into the field treating/rescuing sick and injured wild animals.
