Description:
Stone Environmental led the design, development, and ongoing modernization of the New York Geographic Information Gateway, a comprehensive, award-winning web-based platform created in partnership with the New York Department of State, Office of Planning, Development & Community Infrastructure. The Gateway hosts more than 700 datasets and empowers government agencies, researchers, planners, and the public with reliable, up-to-date geographic data and intuitive tools to support informed decision-making and effective communication. Our work supports New York’s land and water resources, climate resilience, and planning initiatives. The Gateway features a robust data catalog, advanced mapping tools, interactive stories, and immersive learning resources. In 2022, we launched a two-year initiative to migrate the Gateway to ArcGIS Hub, enhancing security, streamlining maintenance, and enabling regular updates. The new Hub site went live in April 2023, retaining original features while introducing new technologies and custom tools. Our team managed the migration of datasets and metadata from Amazon Web Services to ArcGIS Online using Python and ArcGIS Notebooks, replaced legacy tools with ArcGIS Experience Builder, developed custom widgets, created an in-application Content Management Guide, and established partnerships for data sharing with agencies such as the New York State ITS GIS Program Office and NOAA. The Gateway features interactive story maps, infographics, and multimedia content to communicate complex planning and resilience topics, including impacts of extreme weather events and community adaptation strategies. Administrative users can configure site elements, manage metadata, and integrate data from external partners. Stone continues to provide post-launch support for this critical resource for New York State.
