GIS in the Skies

Science is often bounded by the inability of scientists and researchers to be in certain places at certain times. It is difficult to follow the migration patterns of birds or observe their behavior when they are so far above the ground. Scientists working on bird conservation and other bird-related projects rely on various tracking methods to observe and study creatures that have been inaccessible in the past. Biologists, naturalists, conservationists, and others can combine their bird movement data with the power of GIS technology to explore patterns, possibilities, and geographic influences that might have previously been overlooked. By coordinating geographic data about an area with bird activity, researchers can determine what factors are crucial to the species' and area's preservation. Studying migrating bird paths between breeding grounds helps answer questions about different species' routes, which is pertinent information for conservation programs, especially in regions with remote areas that can be difficult to access. GIS not only can help the lives of birds, but it is also used to protect humans. When birds and aircrafts attempt to share the skies, dangerous conditions for both birds and people arise. GIS helps researchers examine different areas of the world and determine possible risks using collected information, such as bird patterns at particular times of the year, which helps reduce the number of fatal bird–aircraft incidents.
