Taking GIS to Another Dimension

In a world with height, depth, and dynamic angles—a world shaped by rivers, valleys, canyons, and mountains—two-dimensional analysis can fall short. When GIS technology is combined with the visualization power of 3D, another realm of analytical tools is created. Surfaces are viewed from multiple viewpoints, enabling users to query a specific surface and determine what is visible from a chosen location on a surface; create a realistic perspective image; model real-world surface features, such as buildings; record or perform three-dimensional navigation; and a host of other functions that are not possible on a two-dimensional level. Using the capabilities provided by such technology, users can manage and visualize data, from simple floor plans to large sets of geographic information in a more effective and realistic manner. Patterns and trends emerge from the multitude of depth that might not have been discovered in a flat, two-dimensional view. Visualizing data in 3D facilitates numerous types of projects, including examining the visual impact of building new structures in an area; analyzing atmospheric, surface, and subsurface pollution dispersion; and many more areas that involve several dimensions of information. Education also gains from bringing another dimension to teaching. By being able to bring material to life through GIS, students at all levels can experience an interactive environment conducive to a complete learning experience.
