Google Photorealistic 3D Tiles in ArcGIS

By Lucy Guerra

It’s coming! Esri will soon be offering a new 3D basemap that streamlines access to Google’s Photorealistic 3D tiles. With just a few clicks, users will be able to experience stunning 3D views of over 2,500 cities across 49 countries. These 3D views will form the foundation of ArcGIS users’ projects. This marks a significant step towards making 3D the default way of thinking and working in ArcGIS, ensuring that users can benefit from the rich, detailed insights that Google’s Photorealistic 3D tiles provide.

What’s in a Basemap?

A basemap is a foundational layer on a map that provides the visual and geographic context for GIS projects. Displayed below other layers of information, a basemap serves as a reference for locational or spatial data. This new 3D basemap will allow any ArcGIS user to enhance their projects with realistic and relatable representations of the real world, making GIS projects more engaging and accessible.

3D for All, No Code Required

This collaboration brings the power of 3D GIS to the masses. ArcGIS users have previously had to have the technical knowledge to integrate Google’s 3D tiles into ArcGIS. This no-code solution will be a game-changing time-saver for any GIS user, regardless of technical expertise.

Elevate Decision-Making

The value of a 3D basemap is significant. It transforms a GIS project from a flat, 2D experience into a multidimensional, lifelike representation of the real world. This enhanced realism not only makes the GIS more relatable but also significantly improves decision-making. For users in industries such as AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction), state and local government, public safety, and commercial and technology, the ability to visualize data in a 3D environment provides a deeper understanding of spatial relationships and context.

Don’t Miss Out!

Stay tuned to the ArcGIS Blog for more updates as the development and refinement of this exciting new feature continues. The commitment is to make 3D more accessible and powerful, enabling users to make more informed decisions and drive better outcomes in their projects.

These stunning 3D views demonstrate the power of 3D in ArcGIS. Users simply click on the basemap gallery and select the right basemap for their work.
