SafeGraph NAICS codes update in ArcGIS Business Analyst

By Yann Bovet and S David

In the June 2025 release, Business Analyst is using updated 2022 NAICS codes for the SafeGraph data source. This impacts several Business Analyst workflows.

SafeGraph is one of three data sources providing points of interest (POI) data for the ArcGIS Places datasets. POI data, also known as places data, are geographic locations represented by a single latitude-longitude point. A place may be a business like a restaurant or bookstore.

NAICS codes update in SafeGraph data

Previously, SafeGraph data in Business Analyst used NAICS codes from 2017. NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) codes are 6-digit codes used by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico to organize places into 20 major business sectors. As part of the June 2025 release, SafeGraph NAICS codes have been updated by Esri to use the NAICS 2022 code system, making it consistent with the NAICS codes used in the other points of interest (POI) data sources.

Benefits of using 2022 NAICS codes

The NAICS codes update in SafeGraph data transitions Business Analyst from using the 2017 categories to new 2022 categories. The benefits of using 2022 NAICS codes include:

  • Using NAICS codes across POI datasets is now a consistent experience. Now you’ll be able to seamlessly use the same code when switching between POI data sources.
  • The updated NAICS codes better accommodate contemporary business types, such as wireless cellphone stores or social media providers.
  • Using updated NAICS codes offers greater granularity, with more specified business classifications. For example, broad “miscellaneous” categories have been split into more specific categories, like gardening centers or shoe retailers.

NAICS codes in Business Analyst

In Business Analyst, you may come across NAICS codes when using SafeGraph in the following ways:

For example, you could previously search 446110 to return the result Pharmacies and Drug Stores. With the updated codes, this has changed. Now, you can search 456110 to return the updated result, Pharmacies and Drug Retailers.

The code for pharmacies has changed.

If you previously saved searches that use codes that have been updated, you will need to update your search. The saved search will not be available to use in the workflow, but you can view the codes used. Replace codes as necessary in reference to the SafeGraph NAICS code comparison table in order to reproduce the saved search.

This blog article describes the NAICS code update in the Safegraph data source. This data update improves searching and filtering by NAICS codes in the SafeGraph data source. Additionally, the SafeGraph NAICS codes are now consistent with the NAICS codes used in the other points of interest (POI) datasets. In Business Analyst, this update is applicable to the points of interest (POI) search and void analysis workflows
