arx iT designed and implemented an innovative Web GIS solar mapping platform for the Canton of Geneva, enabling citizens to assess the solar energy potential of their rooftops and evaluate the benefits of installing photovoltaic or solar thermal systems. The solution combines Esri ArcGIS technologies, 3D GIS, LiDAR data, advanced geoprocessing and cloud computing. Solar potential is calculated from a detailed 3D urban model of the entire Canton of Geneva, generated from high-resolution LiDAR data. Due to the volume and complexity of the geospatial data and the computationally intensive processing algorithms, arx iT designed a scalable and reliable cloud-based GIS architecture capable of handling large geoprocessing workloads. Through an intuitive interactive map, users can identify their building, explore rooftop solar potential, estimate energy production and financial savings, and compare available solar technologies and their efficiency. This project demonstrates arx iT’s expertise in ArcGIS-based Web GIS, 3D geospatial data processing, LiDAR, cloud GIS architectures, large-scale geoprocessing and the development of high-performance geospatial applications for public authorities.
