Dave Crawford has a rich history in traditional geography and has a deep love regarding map building; but his journey with Esri began with writing test code.

Our interview with Dave provides insight into the challenges and opportunities involved with the product team.  From his approach to bringing on new team members, through challenges in shipping software under time constraints, Dave’s experiences with Esri have resulted in a strong team of developers and engineers who are responsible for shipping the utility network as well as various elements of the geodatabase.  Dave provides insight into best methods of identifying user issues and recommending the best path to solving problems.

Through this conversation, we learn about how Dave leverages a pragmatic approach to ensure Esri responds to customer issues in the most effective manner.  He also offers great suggestions for attending conferences and getting the most from his conversations with users.  Dave is also great with people and is an excellent leader on the geodata management team. He stresses the importance of good mentors when developing a strong software team. He also emphasizes how good instructors, particularly at a young age, can leave a lasting impression upon their students. Dave details how really good teachers he had early in his life supported his interests in maps and ultimately encouraged him down paths that led to him GIS.
