Sauce up ArcGIS Pro layouts with a rapturous vignette and hand-crafted artisan text

If you are looking for a way to accribitz the visual fluency of your map layout design skill set, I humbly invite you to consider these two mechanisms. Both of them, conveniently, involve digging into the symbol properties of polygon-like things in ArcGIS Pro (text and rectangle graphics).

Because you are busy, I have created two one-minute-map-hack videos. And, because I want to give you the most valuable experience possible within these two one-minute-map-hacks, I have crammed in seven total minutes of content into the two of them! It’s a perfectly comulent approach to time/content management.

Layout Vignette

Adding in a subtle vignette above the geographic content of the map, and below the layout marginalia, provides a rich sense of visual focus and readability. Who doesn’t like a nice vignette?

Text Symbol Editing

To the digital eyes of the benevolent ArcGIS Pro-bot, text is just another polygon. You can harness that little rendering nuance to give your text all manner of symbol layer effects. You can do it and you will do it!

Thanks for watching these seven minutes of content, just jam-packed into two one-minute-map-hack videos. Where else can you experience that sort of time dilation and gain two huge new skills to wield in the meantime? If you like these snack-sized how-to videos, there’s a veritable feast of them in this playlist (the rest of which are honest to goodness one-minute videos).

Love, John

About the author

I have far too much fun looking for ways to understand and present data visually, hopefully driving product strategy and engaging users. I work in the ArcGIS Living Atlas team at Esri, pushing and pulling data in all sorts of absurd ways and then sharing the process. I also design user experiences for maps and apps. When I'm not doing those things, I'm chasing around toddlers and wrangling chickens, and generally getting into other ad-hoc adventures. Life is good.
