How Can GIS Help Combat the Opioid Epidemic?
Opioid abuse is destroying lives, devastating families and communities across the United States. One pill can kill. One pill can cause addiction. Addiction and overdoses are happening in communities to people of all backgrounds, ages, and genders. This crisis is pressing, personal, and heartbreaking. Organizations from the federal, state, and local levels are using GIS to fight back against this epidemic. We will look at ways to monitor opioid-related overdoses as well as fight the fraudulent actors fueling the epidemic. We will use spatial analysis to find outliers of opioid prescribers and pharmacies.
